Swan provided the pencils for Alan Moore's imaginary tale Whatever Happened to the Man of Tomorrow? which was Swan's final major contribution to the series. He was released from his regular Superman duties in 1986, though he would infrequently return to the character for another decade. His final Superman contribution was five pages in Superman: The Wedding Album #1, which was released six months after his death. Decades later, three previously unpublished pages of Swan's art were incorporated into a story in 2018's Action Comics #1000.
