The Divine Continuum is the abstract representation of all Creation from DC Comics. It is part of the Omniverse.
History
According to Dr. Bonnie Baxter, the Divine Continuum is Existence itself, composed of two separate aspects of reality: the first half is Space, which is physically represented by the so-called Infinite Frontier, a little-scaled omniverse that is in turn part of the Greater Omniverse; the second half is Time, which is represented by Hypertime, the collection of all the infinite Alternate Timelines and Possible Futures.
The Multiverse, the embodiment of the Space half, was created by the Super-Celestial Perpetua. Due to the many Crises that the Multiverse has faced as a consequence of various attacks over the millennia, the Space aspect has always been changing, being shaped around a single universe referred to as the "Metaverse", until The Hands of the Greater Omniverse chose to merge all of its iterations inside an omniverse.
This Omniverse is stated to be conceptual at its core, while the Hypertime is emotional, as it perpetually changes due to a natural reaction to the events as well as to direct manipulations of the Timestream: the timeline is split for every major crossroads, which leads to the birth of endless possibilities.
The bridge between the two halves of the Divine Continuum was discovered during the Zero Hour event, the "First Crisis in Time", which slightly changed the history of New Earth.
Although it is the very foundation of reality, the concept behind the Divine Continuum was unknown even to the greatest minds.[1] The Post-Flashpoint counterparts of the Time Masters were originally the only ones to have knowledge of the Divine Continuum: the leader of the Time Masters, Rip Hunter, has also drawn a schematic explanation of the Divine Continuum's structure on a note in the Time Masters' lair.[2]
The truth about the Divine Continuum became a well-known fact a few days after the ending of the Dark Crisis as one of the Time Masters, Dr. Bonnie Baxter, revealed to the world its existence in a talk show which the genius superhero Mister Terrific/Michael Holt was also attending. As Mr. Terrific began explaining the alterations to the Multiverse due to the various Crises, Bonnie Baxter revealed to him and the rest of the world that the Frontier was just one half of the Divine Continuum, as Time is the most dangerous aspect due to Hypertime Crises completely replacing the timeline and leaving no awareness of the past events except for vague memories because of the so-called Mandela Effect.[1]
Notes
- Being a two-sided abstraction, the Divine Continuum probably came to be after the World Forger created Hypertime, which, however, occurred several billion years after the birth of the First Multiverse.
- The Infinite Frontier currently representing the Space side of the Divine Continuum implies that, before its creation, the many iterations of the Multiverse represented it since the very beginning.
Trivia
- The Divine Continuum's name is obviously a pun on DC Comics.
- Rip Hunter's scheme also highlights the D and C letters.
