Synopsis for "Crisis"
Examining a Legion ring that once belonged to Ferro Lad, Doctor Manhattan is confronted by most of Earth's superheroes, who have tracked the energy spike from the Moscow explosion to Mars. Guy Gardner leads everyone in attacking Manhattan after Martian Manhunter broadcasts Manhattan's vision of his future encounter with Superman. Manhattan transports Firestorm seven years into the past, where Ronnie learns that Martin Stein deliberately caused the Firestorm experiment in order to learn more about metahumans. During the fight, Doctor Manhattan dissects Guy Gardner's power ring and analyzes the magic attacks used by the Justice League Dark. Despite Captain Atom disintegrating Manhattan, he reforms himself and takes out all the heroes in an instant. At the Hall of Justice, Lois watches over a recovering Superman while protesters have gathered outside following the events in Moscow. Lex Luthor confronts Lois and reveals he sent her the flash drive as proof that someone is undermining all of creation, mentioning Wally West's history as an example. Wonder Woman comes out of hiding to address the United Nations, hoping to defuse the metahuman arms race. However, the summit is interrupted by Black Adam, Creeper, and Giganta, who take advantage of the absence of the other superheroes to attack the UN.
Stein has written a file about Firestorm, mentioning that he founded the Department of Metahuman Affairs to help other metahumans like his son, who died because he couldn't control his metagene.

Notes
- Jon's words reveal that this story takes place five days after the epilogue of the previous issue.
- According to Jon, the tachyon wave– caused by Firestorm's blast– is the reason behind the future of Prime Earth being hidden from him. Jon previously mentioned this interference to his Non-Linear Time Perception in issue #7.
- This story ultimately reveals that Magic is the residual energy of the original Creation. This is consistent with magic being fueled by the Sphere of the Gods– one of the Seven Energies of Creation born of The Source and used by The Hands to shape every multiverse.
- While facing the Justice League Dark, Doctor Manhattan learns magic, which he never discovered in his home universe.
- Robbie Reed behaves like a child– claiming that he has never left the United States– and also appears in his Human Starfish form. All these details imply that he was never the Operator in the Prime Earth timeline prior to the reality changes from Doomsday Clock #12, placing the events of Dial H for Hero (Volume 1) and, as a consequence, Young Justice (Volume 3) in the altered timeline.
- Reed will be reverted back to childhood after the unknotting of the timeline and the rebirth of Creation.[3]
- Several characters are not supposed to appear during the events of this issue:
- Cyborg and Starfire should be sealed within Sepulkore[4];
- Aquaman should still be stranded on Unspoken Water within the Godsphere in the wake of Drowned Earth;
- However, the alterations to the timeline from issue #12 will probably erase their appearances in this story, keeping their history consistent with the rest of the Rebirth era.
- Gardner Grayle makes a cameo alongside what seems to be a Giant Dalmatian. However, this species does not exist on Prime Earth, implying that the animal is just a common Dalmatian dog.
- Donna Troy strangely wears her Wonder Girl outfit.
- The supplemental informations feature the Firestorm file from the White House.
Trivia
- The title of the issue comes from a quote by Lucius Annaeus Seneca. The epilogue features the full quote: "Wherever there is a human being, there is an opportunity for crisis."
- Doctor Manhattan's inner thoughts reference the additional powers— time travel and history manipulation— shown in Before Watchmen: Doctor Manhattan #1.
- Doctor Manhattan battles Captain Atom, on whom he was originally based. He is also attacked by Nightshade, the original inspiration for Silk Spectre. Joining the fight against Doctor Manhattan are Blue Beetle, the Question and Peacemaker, who served as the respective inspirations for Nite Owl, Rorschach and the Comedian.
- However, DC no longer has the license for Peter Cannon, who was the basis for Ozymandias.
- John's Martian glass structure mirrors the same building he built on the Watchmen Universe version of Mars in Watchmen #4.
- Constantine's warning to Zatanna from this issue is glimpsed by a future version of John in The Sandman Universe Presents: Hellblazer #1.
