Get started with authentication

Application Default Credentials (ADC) let your application use service account credentials to access BigQuery resources as its own identity.

Note that BigQuery doesn't support the use of API keys.

Before you begin

To use the .NET samples on this page in a local development environment, install and initialize the gcloud CLI, and then set up Application Default Credentials with your user credentials.

Install the Google Cloud CLI.
If you're using an external identity provider (IdP), you must first sign in to the gcloud CLI with your federated identity.
If you're using a local shell, then create local authentication credentials for your user account:
```
gcloud auth application-default login
```
You don't need to do this if you're using Cloud Shell.

If an authentication error is returned, and you are using an external identity provider (IdP), confirm that you have signed in to the gcloud CLI with your federated identity.

Go

To use the Go samples on this page in a local development environment, install and initialize the gcloud CLI, and then set up Application Default Credentials with your user credentials.

Application Default Credentials

Client libraries can use Application Default Credentials to easily authenticate with Google APIs and send requests to those APIs. With Application Default Credentials, you can test your application locally and deploy it without changing the underlying code. For more information, see Authenticate for using client libraries.

When you create a service object with the BigQuery Client Libraries and don't pass in explicit credentials, your application authenticates using Application Default Credentials. The following samples show how to authenticate to BigQuery by using ADC.
