Gulool Ja Ja is a character in Final Fantasy XIV: Dawntrail. He is a two-headed Mamool Ja, and the father of Wuk Lamat, Koana, and Zoraal Ja. He is the first ruler of the nation of Tuliyollal in Tural, known as the Dawnservant (連王, Ren'ō?).
History[]
Before Dawntrail[]
Eighty years ago, many races in Tural were constantly at war. Gulool Ja Ja sought to bring the peoples together and founded the nation of Tuliyollal, and was named the Dawnservant. Throughout his rule, Tuliyollal enjoyed a period of undisturbed peace.
Around the same time that Gulool Ja Ja united Tural, a group of explorers led by Ketenramm the Blue arrived from Eorzea. They presented gifts to Gulool Ja Ja who permitted them to stay and explore his kingdom. After several months, they returned to Eorzea, introducing contact between East and West.[3] Ketenramm was one of Gulool Ja Ja's comrades in his quest to unite Tural into one nation.
About twenty years ago, he had a letter sent to Galuf Baldesion in Sharlayan to request his expertise in investigating the legendary golden city in Tural.
Three years prior to the coming of the Final Days, Gulool Ja Ja had begun to feel his advanced age and thus the Vow of Reason began formulating what would become the rite of succession. He died before finalizing everything, and the Vow of Resolve concealed his twin's death while being forced to make the final touches on his own. Gulool Ja Ja chose four contestants to take part in a rite of succession that, according to rumors, involved the golden city and the legendary beast, Valigarmanda. Three of the four claimants, Wuk Lamat, Koana, and Zoraal Ja, were his own children with the fourth claimant, Bakool Ja Ja, hailed from Mamook. Gulool Ja Ja encouraged the contestants to seek out allies from different lands as means of understanding the cultural diversities that the future ruler would have to contend with. Wuk Lamat and Koana were the only two claimants to heed this advice with Koana recruiting former Scions of the Seventh Dawn members Thancred Waters and Urianger Augurelt, while Wuk Lamat journeyed east to recruit the Warrior of Light, having heard tales of their strength and heroism. Meeting the Warrior of Light led to Wuk Lamat also recruiting Alphinaud and Alisaie Leveilleur, as well as Krile Baldesion, with the latter having an interest in her grandfather's work in Tuliyollal with Gulool Ja Ja twenty years prior.
Final Fantasy XIV: Dawntrail[]
Prior to the rite commencing, driven by his love for a good fight, Gulool Ja Ja met Estinien Varlineau during the latter's travels westward and engaged the dragoon in a friendly duel that was cut short by the arrival of Wuk Lamat and the Warrior of Light. Estinien recommended the Warrior as a more worthy opponent, which piqued Gulool Ja Ja's interest as he decided to wait for another time. Assembling the claimants, Gulool Ja Ja explained the rite of succession and sent them on their way. Krile then approached him, and she asked him, if he can tell her anything about the letter he had sent to Galuf Baldesion twenty years ago. He said that he can't, not this time, as telling would give Wuk Lamat an unfair advantage in the rite. But he did say if she helps Wuk lamat to win, then she would get the answers she seeks. He also promised to tell the whole story if Wuk Lamat wins.
Gulool Ja Ja later decided to test the Warrior by sending a private messenger to fetch them while they accompanied Wuk Lamat to Tuliyollal in search of a craftsman for one of the rite's trials. During the duel that followed, Gulool Ja Ja could not fight at full strength without the Vow of Reason as the Vow of Resolve explained his brother was sleeping. Following the duel, Gulool Ja Ja confided to the Warrior the true nature of the trials was to temper away the participants' flaws to prepare a more ideal heir. He also asked the Warrior as a concerned father to look after and protect Wuk Lamat, and also asked not to tell her about this.
When Wuk Lamat and her retinue discovered the gate to the golden city in Skydeep Cenote in Yak T'el, Gulool Ja Ja personally came in there to congratulate her daughter and declared her the winner of the rite. He explained that current circumstances prevents them from opening the gate, but he promised to explain everything, once Wuk Lamat is named the new Dawnservant.
A celebration for Wuk Lamat's ascension was held in Tuliyollal, and to everyone's surprise, Wuk Lamat asked Koana to be the Dawnservant along with her, inspired by his father's heads of Resolve and Reason. Wuk Lamat named herself as the Vow of Resolve and Koana as the Vow of Reason. Gulool Ja Ja gave his approval for this, but ultimately gave the final say of the matter to the people, who also accepted. He then stepped down, and revealed to the people that his head of Reason wasn't actually sleeping; he had died three years ago. This revelation was taken hard by the people, but Gulool Ja Ja claimed he did his duty well, since the rite delivered two new Dawnservants to succeed him.
Later, Gulool Ja Ja told Wuk Lamat, Koana and Krile the whole story about the golden city. He and his companions discovered the city in Skydeep Cenote, but they couldn't make much sense of the place on their own, and so twenty years ago Gulool Ja Ja dictated a letter to the Students of Baldesion to help investigating the matter. Galuf Baldesion answered, and he was astonished at what he saw. The material within was unknown to him, but he determined the glowing runes on them seemed similar to the ones used by South Sea islanders. All of a sudden, the room they were in began to transform, and the gate was revealed. It then opened, and two Lalafells came out of it, carrying a baby and a mysterious artifact. The baby was given to Galuf and Gulool Ja Ja took the artifact, even though he or anyone else couldn't make out what it was. The Lalafells then went back and the gate closed and never opened again. This left Gulool Ja Ja more questions than answers, but he determined that the golden city was located beyond the gate.
Not long after, a flash of lightning erupted with earthquakes in Shaaloani, and a massive dome appeared on Yyasulani. From the dome, a fleet of mysterious airships emerged and headed to Tuliyollal, laying waste all around. Inside the palace, Gulool Ja Ja came face to face with his son, Zoraal Ja, who had undergone a dramatic change in such a short time that Gulool Ja Ja couldn't comprehend it. Zoraal Ja said that he believed Golool Ja Ja was long dead, but now he could kill his father by himself. Seeing his son had gone mad, Gulool Ja Ja saw it as his duty to deal with him to fix his sin, and forbade those present from interfering. Father and son fought, and Gulool Ja Ja was able to deal a mortal blow to Zoraal Ja. But then, a device on Zoraal Ja's head started to flash, and he was revived, leaving everyone speechless. Zoraal Ja then said that even without the head of Reason, Gulool Ja Ja is still a mighty foe. He then used the device again and gained inhuman powers, which allowed him to brutally attack Gulool Ja Ja again and eventually stab him fatally. Griefstricken Wuk Lamat assaulted Zoraal Ja, but was unable to harm him. Alphinaud and Krile attempted to heal Gulool Ja Ja, but it was to no avail. Zoraal Ja then left with issuing challenge to Wuk Lamat to see if she is in his book worthy of being a Dawnservant.
Gulool Ja Ja told everyone to not bother with him, he was beyond saving. He called out to Ketenramm, who was also there, and said they ought to go on a new adventure again. With his dying breath, he told Wuk Lamat and Koana to look after one another.
Wuk Lamat and her allies were eventually able to defeat Zoraal Ja and his Alexandrian army and restore peace as well as form relations with Alexandria inside the dome. A funeral was held to Gulool Ja Ja and he was buried next to the sepulchre atop Worqor Zormor, where his and the names of his companions were carved on by the Yok Huy, after they succeeded in imprisoning the Skyruin Valigarmanda within its own ice. His legacy would also live through his grandson sired by Zoraal Ja, Gulool Ja, named after his grandfather, who was named as the new king of Alexandria after Zoraal Ja's passing.
Characteristics[]
Gulool Ja Ja in the benchmark trailer.
Gulool Ja Ja is a two-headed Mamool Ja. Even by mature two-headed Mamool Ja standards, Gulool Ja Ja is massive, towering over many of his blessed siblings. Like all blessed siblings, the right head has the traits of Hoobigo Mamool ja, while the left head has the traits of Boonewa Mamool Ja. Both heads speak independently with their individual traits, allowing them as a whole to unite all peoples into a thriving nation to treat one another as equals. These traits have translated Gulool Ja Ja into being a caring father for both his adopted children and his only biological son, Zoraal Ja.
The Vow of Resolve on the right is the dominant head, wearing a golden crown with a distinct horn, boisterous with a love for fighting despite being acutely aware of his advanced age. He is compassionate and understanding of others with a love of all who live in Tural as his campaign in the Tuliyollal Saga attests with the help of the Vow of Reason.
The left head, the Vow of Reason, is wise and intelligent. His head is covered in a purple veil accented by four eye-like markings, which the Reason claims to his brother simply sleeping more to recover his energies.
