Leophyne is a non-playable character in Final Fantasy XIV. She is the member of the Passage of the Unbound who stole the Cradle of the Sleepless. Leophyne is the antagonist during the Tank role quests in the Dawntrail expansion.
History[]
Before Dawntrail[]
Leophyne was born of noble blood, but she always despised the traditions of Ishgard and the responsibilities that came with her position. Though a formidable Temple Knight, known for her prowess in combat and skill with mounts, she often defied the norm by spending nights in the gambling halls, until one day she fell asleep on guard duty, allowing her allies to be slaughtered by dragons. For this failure, she was expelled from the Temple Knights and stripped of her title.[1] After her expulsion, her whereabouts became unknown and her name becoming synonymous with disgrace among her former comrades.[2]
Apyaahi and Leophyne.
Leophyne was one of Apyaahi's guests who joined her villainous group, the Passage of the Unbound. Once all those invited to join the organization gathered at Tuliyollal, Apyaahi revealed the existence of sacred treasures around Tural. These artifacts contain the essence of fearsome beasts called Tural Vidraal, and said that with the power of the artifacts they could achieve their goal.[3] Following Apyaahi's instructions, Leophyne came to the village of Xak Tural, posing as a scholar interested in the Cradle of the Sleepless. She managed to deceive the villagers and steal the artifact, which allowed its wielder to transfer fatigue to another and induce sleep. After the theft, she fled to Ishgard with the Cradle, intending to use its power for her own purposes.[2]
Final Fantasy XIV: Dawntrail[]
Back in Ishgard, Leophyne used the Cradle's powers to attempt to tarnish the reputation of the Temple Knights, ridiculing several knights by making them sleep on duty. Leophyne also released several criminals who held a grudge against the Temple Knights to be her henchmen. Eventually Leophyne and her henchmen confronted the Warrior of Light and Tentoawa who were trying to retrieve the Cradle. Tentoawa attempted to confront her but was quickly overwhelmed by the artifact's power and fell into a deep sleep.[4]
Leophyne decided to try to ruin Ishgard's relationship with the Zundu by attacking a delegation that was on its way to Ok' Zundu. She masterminded the airship's crash near Ok' Zundu, using the power of the Cradle of the Sleepless to put the pilots into a deep slumber. Thus Leophyne and her henchmen entered into battle against Tentoawa's party and a joint force of the Temple Knights and the Zundu Warriors.[5]
Leophyne using the Cradle.
While Leophyne used the Cradle to put the knights to sleep, the Zundu warriors performed the sundrop dance to awakening those affected. In the heat of the fight, Leophyne unleashed the Cradle, causing Tentoawa to fall into a deep sleep while trying to shield Loazenikwe and the Warrior of Light. With Tentoawa incapacitated, the Warrior of Light defended him as the Zundu performed the ritual to awaken him. As the tide of battle turned, Leophyne made a final, desperate attempt to use the Cradle on Tentoawa once more. However, the Warrior of Light intervened, taking the full brunt of the Cradle’s power and falling into a deep slumber. Seizing the opportunity, Tentoawa launched a decisive attack on Leophyne, recovering the Cradle and using its power against her. As Leophyne grew drowsy, she stumbled and fell from the precipice into the Sea of Clouds, her griffin diving after her in a last-ditch attempt to save its master.[5]

Personality[]
Though once regarded as a skilled knight and originating from a noble house, Leophyne ultimately wasted her potential due to despising Ishgard's traditions and the expectations that came with being a knight. Instead, Leophyne did as she pleased, such as gambling her nights away until she feel asleep while on duty. This carelessness and laziness allowed many of her fellow knights to be slaughtered by dragons which resulted in Leophyne being disgraced and expelled from the Temple Knights.
Since being expelled, Leophyne nursed a petty grudge against the Temple Knights, unable to reflect that it was her own fault that led to her being seen as a disgrace, and as such developed a desire to humiliate the Temple Knights as a form of revenge. Joining the Passage of the Unbound and gaining the Cradle of the Sleepless was merely a means to complete her revenge. However, as Leophyne began to conduct her scheme, many of her former comrades noted how absolutely petty and ridiculous her goals are. Instead of using the Cradle to do any true damage, aside from ruining peace talks between Ishgard and the Vanu Vanu, Leophyne used the relic to perform pranks on the Temple Knights, to embarrass them, further showcasing her pettiness.
