Surgate Castle is a location in the second world and merged world of Final Fantasy V. It is the home of Xezat Matias Surgate, one of the four Dawn Warriors. The castle is most notable for its library, home to many of the scholars on Galuf's world, as well as half of the Sealed Tome.
History[]
Surgate Castle, or at least its library, may predate the worlds being split. Its library has both half of the Sealed Tome (the other half being in the Library of the Ancients), which was written prior to the worlds being split,[1] as well as a book referencing the Ronka civilization from Bartz's world, titled "Weird Ronka".[2]
It is unknown whether Xezat became king before or after being a Dawn Warrior, wherein he and the other warriors defeated Exdeath 30 years prior to the events of Final Fantasy V, sealing him on Bartz's world.[3]
After an earthquake caused by Exdeath sunk the island where Ghido's Cave is located, Bartz Klauser, Lenna Charlotte Tycoon, Faris Scherwiz, and Galuf Halm Baldesion flew towards Surgate Castle. After exploring the castle, they learned Xezat was not there, having left after realizing that Castle Exdeath was fortified well on the Big Bridge side but was unprotected on its east side.[2] The party then set off toward Castle Exdeath, where they met up with Xezat's fleet of ships to the east of the magical barrier surrounding the castle.
When the worlds merged, scholars from Surgate went to the Library of the Ancients to read its books, allowing the Sealed Tome to be pieced together again.[1]
Geography[]
Surgate Castle is located besides a river cutting through the continent, with a bridge across presumably built by the kingdom. On Galuf's world, it is mostly surrounded by ocean, while on the merged world, it is surrounded more by land.
The castle is mostly self-contained and most of its contents are indoors, with little in the way of castle grounds. Its library is also located indoors, beneath the throne room, and comprises many of the castle's rooms. Among its books are the Sealed Tome, books on monsters, books on the Dawn Warriors battle against Exdeath thirty years prior to Final Fantasy V, a book titled "Weird Ronka", and a book on "donkeys".[2]

Quests[]
The only quest in Surgate Castle is to arrive there after Ghido's Cave sinks. After doing so and meeting the soldiers at the front, they will tell Galuf that Xezat has already left, prompting the player to fly to Xezat's Fleet for the next quest. Before doing so, it is worth obtaining the Float spell found in the castle, and exploring its shops.
Musical themes[]
The theme that plays at Castle Surgate is called "The Castle of Dawn."
