Kenya African National Union (KANU) flag
There is some uncertainty if the rooster on this flag should be holding
an axe (as in the coat of arms).
It seems there is a bit confusion between the KANU and the
Presidential
flags. The KANU flag (pre-independence era) is reported as black-red-green
with a white shield and crossed lances. The presidential flag was:
1) National flag with black square in center and in that the national
arms.
2) Blue flag with a cockerel, two golden lances crossed and a red shield.
3) Daniel Arap Moi changed the background color to green (adopted September
1978). Two versions are reported: one with no cockerel and one with
the central emblem was changed later to a cockerel.

It seems the Kenya African National Union (KANU) and the National Development
Party (NDP) have merged or about to.
See allAfrica
com.:
The party retains the name Kanu, the symbol of the cockerel, and the
index finger salute, but provisions have been made to allow party organs
to decide on slogans and colours of the flag.

Flag of the KANU - variant
image
by Jarig Bakker, 07 Jan 2002
I found a B/W emblem in Rabbow's 'dtv-Lexikon politischer Symbole,
1970, and put that on Jorge's KANU-flag.
Before Kenya became independent the KANU used the flag, listed as the
KAU-flag; the KANU's emblem was the cockerel with the battle-axe. That
cockerel was put on the Kenyan CoA; the cockerel without battle-axe was
put on the presidential flag, according to Whitney Smith, and it can now
be found on the site of the (still ruling) KANU
- it looks as if the party now has a horizontal BRV flag with in the center a white disk with a red
battle-axe-less
cockerel facing the fly. But that's sheer speculation.

Kenya African Union
image by Ivan Sache, 27 March 1998
On 11 March 1998, I posted a list of national flags which were directly inspired
by the flag of one or two political parties. Some of these party flags are
illustrated in Smi75b including that of the Kenya African Union (pre-independence predecessor to KANU), proportions
2:3.
Horizontal black-red-green (without thin white stripes).
Masai shield and spears in white, centered on the red stripe and not
extending over the two other stripes.
