billybobbain - Overview

Hi, I'm Wayne Young

Software engineer with a long history in systems, security, and experimentation.

My GitHub username billybobbain comes from a fictional character used in differential equation problems by one of my college math professors. The name stuck during grad school when I was teaching, and it has followed me around the internet ever since.

Interests

  • Fractals and mathematical visualization
  • Image compression experiments
  • Distributed systems and backend architecture
  • Exploring what AI tools can help engineers build

Current Projects

FractalD

A Mandelbrot explorer for Android written in Kotlin.
I'm currently experimenting with palette animation, deep zoom behavior, and sharing coordinates with the fractal community.

Earlier Experiments

Back in the early 1990s I wrote fractal image compression experiments while in graduate school, inspired by fractals and iterated function systems. Some of that code still survives in this account.

Fun Fact

Some of my earliest graphics experiments involved generating fractals and space-filling curves and sending raw PostScript to an Apple LaserWriter.

Late at night in the computer lab I even experimented with early 3D visualizations using cheap red/blue glasses — occasionally recruiting the cleaning staff as unofficial testers to confirm that the effect actually worked.
