The Strontian race hail from the the planet Strontia, part of the Shi'ar Empire. The race became a part of the Shi'ar Empire after the father of Majestor T'Korr brought the cure to the Wraith Plague that had ravaged their planet and swore unending loyalty to the Shi'ar throne in return. They are a humanoid purple-skinned race with vast powers that outweigh most other species in the galaxy. Gladiator of the Shi'ar Imperial Guard is a Strontian. The species is almost extinct as there are only a handful left in the universe.[1]
- Confidence Empowerment: Strontian abilities are greaty supplemented by their own belief in oneself, faith in themselves and in their own magnanimously impressive abilities further emboldens their already impressive superpowers to new and splendiferous heights.
- Superhuman Strength: Strontians possess limitless physical strength, with their potential being infinite depending on their level of confidence. They are among the physically strongest beings in the Universe, with even ordinary Strontians capable of decimating entire armies. Enhanced Strontians such as Gladiator have shattered planets with the force of their blows, collapsed stars, and even shaken the universe itself with a mere strike. Gladiator has harmed an empowered Galactus who had absorbed entities such as Shuma-Gorath, Dormammu, Nightmare, and Satannish—and even made the Living Tribunal know fear. He has also stood equal to Captain Universe, the manifestation of Eternity, and has been declared superior to both Hulk and Hyperion combined, embodying irresistible and unmatched strength. The power of the Strontians is directly tied to their confidence; the more assured they are, the stronger they become. They are incomparable throughout the universe.
- Superhuman Speed: Strontians are among the fastest beings in the Marvel Universe. Kubark, the Kid Gladiator, was unimpressed by Quicksilver’s speed, showcasing the natural superiority of his race. Gladiator himself has traveled across galaxies in mere moments, transcended time with infinite speed, and even surpassed Heimdall’s all-seeing eyes, demonstrating immeasurable velocity. The level of his speed depends on his confidence.
- Superhuman Agility: Strontians are not merely agile in the physical sense — their agility extends to a cosmic scale. Their balance, coordination, and spatial awareness operate on a level that transcends conventional physics. In one of the most astonishing demonstrations of this ability, Gladiator maneuvered freely within the Time Bubble, a realm where time itself stood still. Relying solely on his own senses — perception, orientation, and reaction — he navigated the frozen reality with flawless precision. This feat illustrates that Strontian agility is more than speed or reflexes; it is a manifestation of their ability to orient themselves in environments that defy natural laws. Whether in battle across galaxies or within distorted dimensions, Strontians exhibit an unparalleled mastery of movement, making them among the most agile beings in the universe.
- Superhuman Reflexes: Strontians have demonstrated incredible reaction speed. Xenith reacted almost instantly to every threat and proved capable of easily dodging all of Ravenous’s attacks. Gladiator’s reflexes are similarly heightened. Kallark has caught a bullet fired from a highly advanced weapon just before it could strike Vulcan, reacted within nanoseconds to block a punch from Hyperion, and even dodged a point‑blank photonic blast from Galactus himself. His combat speed is so extraordinary that he was able to strike multiple opponents—including Rachel Summers, Groot, Rocket Raccoon, Drax, Major Victory, Havok, and Polaris—before any of them could react. His perception is so refined that he was able to count ten billion micro‑sentinels inside Jean Grey’s body in mere moments, demonstrating both micro‑vision and processing speed.
- Superhuman Stamina: Strontians possess extraordinary physical stamina, allowing them to fight at peak capacity for extended periods without exhaustion. Their musculature produces far fewer fatigue toxins than most known species, enabling them to endure battles that would overwhelm even the greatest champions. Gladiator has operated at superhuman speeds for months without tiring and recovered faster than Hyperion after a clash of their eye beams. He has fought relentlessly inside a temporal anomaly where time itself was frozen, remaining unaffected by its destabilizing effects. They are described as almost unkillable and all-powerfull. Their stamina is potentially limitless, tied directly to their confidence.
- Superhuman Durability: Strontians’ bodily tissues are far tougher and more resistant to physical injury than those of most beings. They can withstand high‑caliber bullets, survive unaided in the vacuum of space, endure powerful concussive blasts, falls from tremendous heights, and blows from superhumans such as the Hulk without sustaining injury. Strontians are also highly resistant to extreme temperatures, particularly intense heat. They are capable of flying through stars completely unharmed, and Gladiator has withstood the explosive force of a supernova without injury. He has resisted attacks from the Starbrand, the Phoenix Force, and even designated assaults said to rival Odin’s power. Strontians are often described as almost unkillable, with Gladiator himself referred to as indestructible. As with all their abilities, the level of their durability is directly tied to their confidence; the more assured they are, the greater their resilience becomes.
- Invulnerability: Strontians possess extraordinary physical durability and are virtually impervious to most forms of physical damage. They can withstand high‑caliber bullets, powerful concussive blasts, falls from tremendous heights, and blows from superhumans such as Hulk and Hyperion. Strontians can also survive unaided in the vacuum of space and endure exposure to extreme temperatures, particularly intense heat. Gladiator has shown himself capable of flying through stars completely unharmed and has even withstood the explosive force of a supernova‑like event. His invulnerability also renders him immune to diseases, infections, contaminants, corrosives, and radiation—except for a rare form of radiation that can drain his powers and vitality. Strontians are described as all‑powerful and invulnerable. However, the level of their durability depends directly on their confidence; if Gladiator’s confidence falters, his invulnerability weakens.
- Flight: By harnessing and manipulating gravitons, Strontians are able to defy gravity, granting them the ability to fly. Their flight speed rivals that of the fastest known starships, and they are capable of achieving faster‑than‑light travel through hyperspace. Gladiator has been observed flying at 100 times the speed of light, traversing from Pluto to Earth in mere seconds, and even surpassing entire galaxies in moments.
- Heat Beams: Strontians are capable of firing highly concentrated beams of energy from their eyes. These beams can reach extremely high temperatures, though their maximum limit remains unknown, as they possess infinite potential. Gladiator has been shown to generate heat hotter than stars, demonstrated by feats such as burning through Hulk’s skin, stalemating Tyrant and Phoenix Cyclops, piercing the fabric of space‑time itself, and even burning an empowered Galactus. The intensity of these heat beams is directly tied to the Strontians’ confidence. The more assured they are, the greater the destructive potential of their ocular energy, making their heat vision one of the most devastating abilities in the Multiverse.
- Hyper Vision: Strontians are capable of projecting ocular energy that transcends mere destructive force, interacting with structures beyond space‑time itself. Gladiator demonstrated this ability by piercing the cosmic web with his hyper vision, allowing him to perceive divergent time streams existing outside the conventional flow of reality. This feat highlights not only the destructive potential of Strontian vision but also its capacity to breach dimensional boundaries.
- Microscopic Vision: Strontians possess the ability to perceive objects at an incredibly small scale, extending beyond the subatomic level. Gladiator has demonstrated this power by detecting and counting billions of micro‑sentinels within Jean Grey’s body in mere moments, showcasing both microscopic vision and extraordinary processing speed.
- Superhuman Breath: Thanks to their incredible lung capacity, Strontians are also able to draw in large amounts of air and then expel it all to create gale and hurricane force winds. They can also chill their breath to freeze targets.
- Accelerated Healing: Strontians possess an advanced regenerative capability that allows them to recover from injuries at a vastly accelerated rate compared to most species. Gladiator has demonstrated this power on multiple occasions, such as recovering quickly after being impaled by Nightsword, Hela’s enchanted weapon, and regenerating his arm in a short time after being aged for millennia by Tempos, a Marauder mutant.
- Longevity: Strontians possess an extended lifespan. Gladiator's healing factor also keeps him in optimal health and decreases the rate of his aging by a high degree granting him a life span that is several millennia long. He has survived for centuries with little sign of aging.
- Shockwave: Strontians can generate powerful shockwaves with their hands, strong enough to incapacitate multiple foes simultaneously. Gladiator has demonstrated this ability in combat, dispersing entire groups of enemies with a single strike.
- Extrasensory Perception: Strontians possess heightened transdimensional perception and spatial‑temporal awareness. Gladiator has observed Galactus operating within a divergent time stream and perceived events occurring across galaxies, demonstrating the ability to sense phenomena beyond conventional dimensions.
- Psi Resistance: Strontians are capable of causing a counter-force against telepathic assaults and probes. However, telepaths of sufficient power are capable of penetrating their psionic defenses to an extent.
Strontians are vulnerable to certain specific wavelengths of varied radiation, such as emissions from a Nega Bomb.[2] The Strontian race also all share a vulnerability to magic as the different dimension Hyperion, their strongest having been nearly laid low by the forbidden craft despite still using magic during training operations to better prepare for it.[1] A significant portion of a Strontian's powers, especially strength, stamina, and resistance to physical injury, are affected by their level of confidence. If their confidence in themselves wavers, they have been known to weaken significantly.[3] There are certain pressure points on a Strontian's body that an able enough combatant can exploit to paralyze them if initiated properly, as Logan demonstrated when he disabled Kubark, Gladiator's son in battle.[4] Furthermore, the psychic aspect of their abilities renders their abilities vulnerable to being siphoned and turned against them, albeit without appreciable decrease in strength, as Jean Grey demonstrated during The Trial of Jean Grey.[5]

The Strontian homeworld was previously ruled by a Council of Elders. In time, the planet swore eternal loyalty to the Shi’ar Imperial Empire, under the authority of the Emperor‑Majestor or Empress‑Majestrix.
Highly advanced, with warp-drive starships, Stargate space-warping technology that allows for instantaneous travel between galaxies and ability enhancement procedures called the Gladiator Process.
Warrior culture. The Strontians are said to value nothing above duty and honor.[1]
Like the other races fallen under the Shi'ar Empire, Gladiator and presumably the rest of his species were converted to the Shi'ar religion that venerated the gods Sharra and K'ythri.[6][7] However, Gladiator once prayed to Rao.[8] Who or what is Rao is unknown so far, though it may have been a figure revered by the Strontians.
Only three known Strontians remain alive: Kallark, also known as Gladiator, Xenith, known simply as the Strontian, and Gladiator's son Kubark, also known as Kid Gladiator. Deceased Strontians included: Tennet and Harrald.
An unnamed pregnant Strontian was seen in the Alpha Flight Intergalactic Hospital.[9]
Gladiator is more than a title amongst the Strontian's in the Shi'Ar Imperial Guard. The strongest and most fit to serve as praetor amongst their rank undergo a dangerous "Gladiator Process" procedure in which the natural abilities that their race possess are all supercharged, even giving them Self-Sustenance to enable survival in the airless vacuum of space.[1] Kallark of the Guard is one such Strontian whom had undergone the "Gladiator Process" to achieve his rank.
The Strontians are a loose pastiche of the Kryptonians of the DC Universe. Strontian abilities are identical to those of Kryptonians bar their psychic origin, both races have largely humanoid designs, both are largely extinct, and the name derives from strontium, an element two spaces below krypton. Gladiator, Xenith, and Kubark are similarly analogous to Superman, Supergirl, and Superboy. Their strength being derived from their confidence is also similar to the Green Lanterns deriving their power from their will force. Rao may also be a reference to DC's Rao who was a sun god worshiped by the Kryptonians.
