World War III begins on Earth. Nuclear weapons are detonated in a conflict between the Eastern Coalition and the West and its allies. Amongst those most devastated by the conflict is the newly emerging Muslim Bloc. Cities such as Tel Aviv, Jerusalem, Riyadh, Karachi, New Delhi, London, Paris, Washington, DC and New York City are among those hit with nuclear weapons (though not all are destroyed, and other cities are devastated by conventional weapons).^[2]^[3]^[4]^[5]

During an attack with nuclear weapons on Richmond, Indiana, a group of Humans sheltered in the local East Fork Presbyterian Church is saved by Gabrielle Burnham and transported to Terralysium.^[9]
