Alexander Fleming (6 August 1881 - 11 March 1955) was a Nobel Prize-winning Scottish biologist from the planet Earth.
Biography[]
In 1928, Fleming discovered the antibiotic penicillin. (TOS reference: Star Fleet Medical Reference Manual)
The discovery came unintentionally, as he'd left an open container of staphylococcus bacteria and an uneaten sandwich in his lab before leaving on a vacation. He returned to find blue mold had halted bacterial growth. The story would later be taught in schools. (TLE novel: Catalyst of Sorrows)
Legacy[]
Fleming was honored by Starfleet in the 24th century with the Wambundu-class USS Fleming and the Olympic-class USS Fleming. (ST reference: The Star Trek Encyclopedia, 4th ed.)
- Fleming's portrait graced the cover of Valiant and TV21, Issue 73, which featured the serialized release of part 10 of TOS comic: "The Void of Storms".
