Easter Island

Easter Island (also known as Rapa Nui) is an island in the South Pacific Ocean of Earth. It was originally inhabited by the Polynesian people, who gave it the name, "The Navel of the World". The island was most famed for the rows of large head sculptures facing out across the ocean. It was the location of Rano Raraku, an inactive volcano.

History and specifics[]

In the 18th century, the Dutch explorer Jacob Roggeveen was credited with the discovery of Easter Island by Europeans during an expedition in the Pacific Ocean. (The Official Starships Collection Issue 124: "S.S. Emmette")

A group of three moai from Easter Island could be spotted as the time stream reset itself at the end of the Temporal Cold War. (ENT episode: "Storm Front")

By the mid 23rd century, much of Easter Island housed the Museum of the South Pacific. (TOS novel: Strangers from the Sky)

The island's culture had become stagnant, evidenced by the enormous effort expended to repeatedly build the same statues. In 2268, Spock considered the cultural circumstances comparable to those in a city discovered on a planet 3,000 light years from the galactic core which consistently reused the same architectural forms. (TOS - New Visions comic: "Time's Echo")

In 2286, baby humpback whale Jessie was born not far from Easter Island. (FASA RPG module: The Hottest Blood of All)

Zak Kebron, the stoic Brikar security and tactical officer of USS Excalibur in 2373, was more than once described as being as immobile as an Easter Island statue. During a security assignment in 2361, he once hid within a statue for three days. (NF novel: Martyr, NF - No Limits short story: "Waiting for G'Doh, or, How I Learned to Stop Moving and Hate People")

Similar rows of head sculptures were found on Scythe in the year 2269 near the entrance to a thousand-year-old missile base. Dr. Leonard McCoy noted the similarly to Easter Island's sculptures while visiting the asteroid's surface. Similar facial stone monoliths of this type were also found on Vandu II and were also fashioned by one Orion culture. (TOS video game: 25th Anniversary mission: That Old Devil Moon)
