Maildun

The Maildun was a 30th or 31st century Iolan starship, a non-aligned generational ship that departed Iolos, a former member of the Federation, in the aftermath of devastation wrought by the Temporal Wars. (DSC novel: Wonderlands)

Service history and disposition[]

The small planet Iolos suffered widespread destruction during the Temporal Wars, a time travel war that lasted until shortly before the Burn[1] occurred in the year 3069[2].

The Iolos natives awaited support from the Federation but were left to their own devices. They constructed the generation ship Maildun and launched after a single starship arrived, becoming refugees.

The ship was operated from a control room, which could be worked by a crew of three.

The people living for generations aboard the Maildun resented the Federation for abandoning their world after the Temporal Wars. In the 3180s decade, dissent had erupted between the elder and younger people after the elders had painted the Federation and its Starfleet as a myth. In 3188, the Maildun came under attack from White Palm raiders. The White Palm was an emerging syndicate operating from Sector 40. The younger people issued a distress call, which was answered by Courier Michael Burnham of the Alice.

Burnham repelled a White Palm attack when she arrived using a courier trick. When the Maildun failed to respond to her calls, Burnham and her passenger Binye beamed over to investigate. Burnham and Binye were incarcerated during a conversation with Aoila and members of her group when Burnham revealed herself as an officer holding the rank of commander in Starfleet. The woman and adolescent were liberated by the "dissidents" but later recaptured.

During a standoff, the White Palm raiders returned. Commander Burnham and Binye boarded the Maildun again and captured the control room. She ordered both groups to supply two people each to act as her crew. After they complied, Burnham used another courier trick to drive the raiders into abandoning their attack on the Maildun altogether.

In the aftermath, Burnham acted as a diplomat to find a lasting compromise between the Iolos descendants. The Maildun changed course to Earth, where Admiral Senna Tal had sent a call to gather Starfleet from in 3177. Elders unwilling to join up with the Federation were allowed to leave, or continue the journey after the Maildun visited Earth.

Half a dozen settled on Sanctuary Four, where Binye and her mother Zuka lived, while others accompanied Burnham to the former Federation Spaceport Devaloka. (DSC novel: Wonderlands)
