Refit

A refit or retrofit refers to the overhauling of a space vessel with updated technology, most often to extend the useful life of the vessel.

History and specifics[]

The Federation starship USS Enterprise underwent an extensive, eighteen-month refit completed in the year 2273. So extensive was the refit that Captain Willard Decker told Admiral James T. Kirk that the Enterprise was almost totally new. (TOS movie, novelization & comic adaptation: The Motion Picture). Very little was left unmodified during the refit. About the only things left untouched were structural supports in the saucer section and those were incorporated into the new design. (ST reference: Mr. Scott's Guide to the Enterprise)

In this time refited too the Miranda-class, during the refit become the ships also new warp nacelles. (FASA RPG module: Federation Ship Recognition Manual; ST reference: Starship Spotter)

In 2293 come the significantly modified version from Excelsior-class as the new USS Enterprise. This version was equipped with new impulse engines, Bussard collectors and more technical device. (TNG movie: Generations; The Official Starships Collection: Issue 40, page 5)

In 2372 the refitted USS Lakota become a stronger weapon system. (DS9 episode: "Paradise Lost")

The Ambassador-class and Galaxy-class also had refitted versions; the Ambassador-class refits was in the Yamaguchi-subclass with modified Bussard collectors, deflector dish, and third shuttlebay. The Galaxy-class refit was the USS Venture with new phasermoduls. The Sovereign-class USS Enterprise sometime between 2375 and 2379 was refitted with 4 extra phaser arrays mounted on the nacelle pylons and 5 more torpedo tubes. (ST movie: Star Trek: Nemesis)

In the Kelvin timeline the USS Enterprise in 2260 after his damages have some modified with wider impulse engine and slightly smaller warp nacelle with new designed nacelle pylons. (TOS movie: Star Trek Into Darkness)

The time-displaced USS Discovery in 3189 refitted detached nacelles, a modified navigational deflector, programmable matter control surfaces, an enhanced spore drive control system and cloaking device. Her registry was also changed as NCC-1031-A. (DSC episode: "Scavengers"; DSC episode: "Su'Kal")
