Tests of Courage is a TOS comic omnibus released in August 1994. It collected Howard Weinstein's story arc The Tabukan Syndrome, first released in DC volume 2, Issues 35-40 by DC Comics in 1992. The arc showcased Captain Hikaru Sulu aboard the USS Excelsior.
Description[]
- From George Takei's introduction
- A new ship
- A new captain
- A new danger
- Hikaru Sulu, newly installed as captain of the USS Excelsior, has his baptism of fire in this adventure. Joining him to solve the mystery of a vanished cache of dangerous weaponry are his old compatriots on the USS Enterprise.
- It's... a human drama of old friendships and the testing of new relationships, of the obsession with power and the search for the coexistence of infinite diversity in infinite combinations. And for me personally, it is an enormously satisfying tale of the emergence of the indomitable team of two starship captains working in dynamic concert with each other — the grizzled war horse, James Tiberius Kirk, and a new leader stepping out on his own from Kirk's tutelage, Hikaru Sulu.
- Howie Weinstein is a storyteller of compelling power and delicate nuance. With Tests of Courage, he has written a rip-snorting blast of a space opera.

Background[]
- Author Howard Weinstein wrote, "Somebody was going to be first to write about Sulu's promotion to Excelsior captain. Why not me? One of the pleasures of writing comics was the flexibility to make a story as long as it needed to be. While some fit into a couple of issues, this Sulu adventure demanded epic scale. It ran six issues and was later collected in graphic-novel format with an introduction by George Takei, who was delighted to see Sulu featured in a way the movies never could." (Star Trek Magazine Issue 153/US 26: "Minding the Gaps, Part 2")
