"The House of Quark" is an episode of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine. The episode originally aired in October 1994. The episode was written by Ronald D. Moore and was directed by Les Landau.

Quark becomes leader of a Klingon Great House after he claims he killed a Klingon in combat.

Summary[]

Patronage at Quark's bar is down, with Quark attributing it to the threat of the Dominion. There is one customer, a Klingon who has had too much bloodwine. When Quark cuts him off, the Klingon attacks Quark with his knife, with the Klingon accidentally stabbing himself when the pair crash to the floor. Seeing an opportunity, Quark exaggerates what happened in tales to his customers and that he purposely killed the Klingon. Rom warns Quark that the Klingon’s family might seek revenge.

Quark learns from the Odo that the man he killed was called Kozak, the leader of a powerful Klingon family. Quark is accosted by a Klingon named D’Ghor, who claims Kozak as his brother and demands to know if he died honorably in combat, or accidentally. Quark says that Kozak died honourably, which seems to satisfy D’Ghor.

Kozak’s widow Grilka arrives, also wanting to know how her husband died. Quark tells her the truth, but Grilka abducts him. Quark finds himself on Kronos, where he is forced to marry Grilka, otherwise Kozak’s estate will pass to D’Ghor, who is not Kozak’s brother but actually a bitter enemy. As Kozak died in an accident and left no heir, Klingon High Council might let Grilka become the new head of the house. Grilka raises the matter in front of Chancellor Gowron, who agrees to consider her request.

Quark learns that D’Ghor has been secretly undermining the House of Kozak for years financially, and brings the evidence to Gowron. D’Ghor deflects the accusation and instead brings in Rom to testify that Kozak did die in an accident. Quark decides to challenge D’Ghor to combat, but soon after combat begins he throws down his bat'leth and prepares for D’Ghor to strike. D’Ghor almost does, but is stopped by Gowron, who admonishes D’Ghor and has him removed. Gowron allows Grilka to lead her house. Grilka divorces Quark and bids him farewell.
