The USS Prodigy (NCC-81084) was a 24th century Federation starship, a Protostar-class training vessel in Starfleet service in the 2380s decade. Following its launch after the Attack on Mars, the Prodigy became Starfleet's only exploratory vessel. (PRD episode: "Ouroboros, Part II")

Service history[]

Following the destruction of the USS Protostar to stop a Vau N'Akat weapon, the living construct, from eliminating Starfleet, the prototype ship's class was formalized by Starfleet Command. Construction of another Protostar-class starship was underway at a ground-based shipyard near Starfleet Academy in San Francisco, California on Earth in the year 2384. Vice Admiral Kathryn Janeway presented the ship, still berthed inside the drydock, to the personnel that had served on the original Protostar. The drydock itself was decorated with the assignment patch of the lost Protostar. (PRD episode: "Supernova")

The ship was still under construction when the Doctor ferried cadets from SFA to Janeway's new command, the Lamarr-class USS Voyager-A. (PRD episode: "Into the Breach, Part I")

In a glimpse of the future, provided by a Traveler machine from Wesley Crusher, Cadet Dal R'El saw himself talking to Gwyndala on the bridge of the Prodigy. (PRD episode: "The Devourer of All Things, Part II")

The USS Prodigy was completed by April 2385. Following the Attack on Mars on First Contact Day, 5 April, Starfleet moved to decommission the ship because it was useful only for exploration. Admiral Janeway consolidated the Prodigy under her aegis and reclassified it as a training vessel. Her group of "Starfleet hopefuls" cadets received field commissions as ensigns and were assigned as the ship's crew. R'El, who had assumed command of the Protostar-class prototype the year before, deferred command of the Prodigy to Gwyndala. The crew wore a distinct style of Starfleet uniform. Upon launch in 2385, the Prodigy was Starfleet's only starship conducting exploratory missions. (PRD episode: "Ouroboros, Part II")
