Picture Segment Description

SCENE 1 Gordon, Bob, and Susan find that Hooper's Store is closed, and observe several packages on the doorstep. Susan, having come from the bakery, overheard that Mr. Hooper's sister had a cake made for him. The packages at the door must be presents, ergo, it must be Mr. Hooper's birthday. They decide to give him a surprise party. When Mr. Hooper shows up, they pretend not to know that it's his birthday, which offends him.

SCENE 2 Susan sets up a table in the yard, and Bob hangs some lanterns. Big Bird has a present for Mr. Hooper, but he doesn't think it's very good. Mr. Hooper comes outside to clean his store sign, and everyone suggests to Big Bird that he buy something from Hooper's Store so that the others can finish decorating the table without Mr. Hooper seeing them.

SCENE 3 Big Bird tries to remember what he wanted to buy at Hooper's Store. He asks for five soda bottles, which, as Mr. Hooper points out, can be arranged in any way.

SCENE 4 Mr. Hooper grows impatient with Big Bird and his arranging of the bottles, so he goes outside, at which point the gang is ready to surprise him with a party. He's elated with all the gifts including a poem Big Bird has written about his store. Everyone sings "Happy Birthday to You."

Susan gives him a carton of vanilla fudge ice cream, which he doesn't want at first. When she says she added some spinach sauce and sand, it makes him want some. She says she also added some pickle syrup, which makes him want more, and finally chocolate-covered seaweed, making him want the most.
