With Gemini Live, you can have a natural, free-flowing conversation with Gemini. You can even interrupt it like when you want to add more details or change the topic of the conversation. With Gemini Live, you can:

  • Talk back and forth: Talk to Gemini without typing, and Gemini will respond back verbally.
  • Brainstorm ideas out loud: Ask for a gift idea, to plan an event, or to make a business plan.
  • Explore: Uncover more details about topics that interest you.
  • Practice aloud: Rehearse for important moments in a more natural and conversational way.

Important: We’re gradually releasing updates to Gemini Live, so the latest changes might not be available to you just yet.

What you need

  • An Android phone or tablet.
  • The Gemini mobile app, or Gemini as your mobile assistant.
    • For now, Gemini Live isn’t available in the Gemini web app or Gemini in Google messages.
  • A personal Google account that you manage on your own or a work or school Google account with access to Gemini Apps.
  • The latest version of the Google App. Learn how to update apps on Android
  • Be 18 or over.

Put Live on hold & resume the Live chat

Mute a Live chat

Mute a Live chat to turn off your microphone but allow Gemini to keep speaking. This keeps your Live session active, letting you resume the conversation without losing context. This differs from ending a chat, which closes the session and provides a transcript.

Tip: When your Live chat is muted, your device’s microphone is muted but your video or screen continues to be shared.

Share your camera in Live

When your camera automatically turns off

When your camera is on in a Live chat, the camera automatically turns off if:

  • Live is put on hold. If you continue your Live chat, the camera automatically turns back on.
  • You leave the Gemini mobile app. The camera doesn’t automatically turn back on when you return to the app.
  • Your screen locks. The camera doesn’t automatically turn back on when you unlock your screen.

Share your device’s screen in Live

Important: To share your screen, you must turn on notifications for Gemini Live on your device.

You can share and get help with what’s on your device’s screen. When you share your screen, your full screen is shared with Gemini.

Share your screen

There are 2 ways to share your device’s screen:

  • On the Live screen in the Gemini mobile app, tap Turn on screen sharing and follow the onscreen instructions.
  • Outside of the Gemini mobile app, open Gemini by saying “Hey Google” or by touch, and tap Share screen with Live and follow the onscreen instructions.
    • “Share screen with Live” might not be available when another feature is shown that’s more helpful.

Stop sharing your screen

There are 2 ways to stop sharing your screen:

  • Go back to the Gemini mobile app, then and tap Turn off screen sharing .
  • From the top edge of your screen, swipe down, then on the “Screen Sharing” card, tap Stop sharing.

When screen sharing automatically stops

When you’re sharing your screen, if Live is put on hold or you lock your screen, screen sharing automatically stops. Screen sharing doesn’t automatically resume when you continue your Live chat or unlock your screen. To resume it, you need to share your screen again.

Use Connected Apps & services in Gemini Live chats

Gemini Apps can use some Connected Apps and other services integrated with Gemini in Live chats to help you with tasks like adding an event to your calendar and searching for recommended restaurants nearby.

  • Support for Connected Apps in Gemini Live is being released gradually and may not be available to you yet.
  • If you’re signed in to a work or school Google Account, only Google Calendar, Google Keep, and Google Tasks can currently be used in Gemini Live chats.

Connect an app

If you’re signed in to a personal Google Account

If the app you ask Gemini to use isn't connected, you will need to connect the app in your Connected Apps settings. Learn how to connect or disconnect an app.

After you connect the app, open Gemini Live and repeat your prompt.

If you’re signed in to a work or school Google Account

To use supported apps in your Live chats, the apps must first be enabled by your account’s Workspace administrator. Learn more about using apps with a work or school account.

Undo an action

  • If Gemini Live is open on your screen: Tap Undo or ask Gemini to undo the action.
  • If Gemini Live is on in the background: For now, you can’t undo an action. If you need to change something, you can edit the event or action in the app.
  • For now, you can’t undo an action with Samsung apps. You can still edit the event or action in the app.

Use Live in the background

Talk to Gemini in the background

Important: To talk to Gemini in the background, you must turn on notifications for Gemini Live on your device.

You can use your phone and other apps while you’re Live with Gemini.

  • To put Live in the background: from the bottom edge of your screen, swipe up.
  • To go back to Live in fullscreen: from the top edge of your screen, swipe down and tap the “Live with Gemini” card.

Continue your Live chat on lock screen

Important: You can’t start Gemini Live on a locked screen. You need to unlock your phone to start it.

If Gemini on lock screen is on, you can continue your Live chat after you lock your phone. If Gemini on lock screen is off, when you lock your phone, Live is put on hold. Learn how to turn on Gemini on lock screen.

When you’re in a Live chat with your phone locked:

  • To go back to Live in fullscreen: on the lock screen, tap the Live with Gemini notification and unlock your phone.
  • To exit Live: on the lock screen, expand the “Live with Gemini” notification and tap End Live mode.

Tip: If your chat is put on hold or ends while your phone is locked, you’ll need to unlock your phone to continue the Live chat.

Change Gemini’s voice

Turn Interrupt Live responses on or off

While Gemini is talking, you can interrupt it by talking. To turn this feature off:

  1. Open the Gemini mobile app .
  2. At the top, tap your Profile picture or initial and then Settings.
  3. Turn Interrupt Live responses on or off.

Tip: If you turn off interrupt Live responses, you can still interrupt Gemini by tapping the screen.

Turn on notifications for Gemini Live

To use Gemini Live in the background or while your device is locked, Live with Gemini notifications must be on.

  1. On your Android phone or tablet, open your device’s Settings app.
  2. Tap Notifications and then App notifications and then Google.
  3. Turn on All Google Notifications if it’s off.
  4. Turn on Live with Gemini if it’s off.

Turn on captions for Gemini Live

You can turn on captions for your Gemini Live conversations. If you turn on captions, all of your Gemini Live conversations will have captions until you turn the setting off.
