UT-Oak Ridge Innovation Institute – utorii

Aligning the expertise and infrastructure of the University of Tennessee and Oak Ridge National Laboratory, the UT-Oak Ridge Innovation Institute (UT-ORII) is a hub for world-class discovery and innovation, interdisciplinary graduate education, and talent development.

A Model of Innovation

UT-ORII is creating the model to build bridges between education, national laboratories and industry in areas of critical national and world need. Leveraging a strong alliance between UT and ORNL that dates back to the Manhattan Project, UT-ORII is uniquely capable of introducing K-12 students to STEM careers and training PhD scholars and building teams of UT and ORNL researchers to tackle some of America’s most challenging research needs.

Hiring Top Scientists

UT-ORII is on track to hire 100 new researchers (50 at UT and 50 at ORNL) by 2030 to advance discovery and innovation in UT-ORII’s four convergent research initiatives (CRIs).

Funding the Build

A core pillar of UT-ORII’s effort is funding for convergent research in identified areas of national need. These convergent research initiatives guide our research efforts and boost our education and workforce programs.

UT-ORII also awards funding to new research teams and graduate students through fellowships.

Laying the Groundwork

UT-ORII is creating the next generation of STEM leaders through K-12 programs and graduate education. Through this effort, UT-ORII prepares engineers, scientists and other STEM talent for a global economy that demands interdisciplinary problem-solving, rapid innovation and real-world application.
