syn: compete, contend, contest mean to strive or struggle. compete emphasizes a sense of rivalry and of striving to do one's best: to compete for a prize. contend suggests striving in opposition or debate as well as competition: to contend against obstacles; to contend about minor details. contest implies struggling to gain or hold something in a formal competition or battle: to contest with the incumbent for the nomination.
