Doubled (bieup)

(pp)

  1. A digraph of hangul, the Korean alphabet.
In North Korea, ㅃ is called 된비읍 (doenbieup), "strong ㅂ (bieup)".
In South Korea, it is called 쌍비읍 (ssangbieup), "doubled ㅂ (bieup)".
ㅃ is pronounced as a bilabial plosive with tense phonation (IPA: [p͈] or [b̬]), i.e. similar to the English p, but with a stiff tongue and glottal opening.

In Dongguk Jeong'un (東國正韻), this letter was used to transcribe voiced bilabial plosive ([b]) of Middle Chinese.
