Ramza has begun walking a path he believes in, and dedicates his life to the people, just as his father, the late Knight Gallant, once did. Ramza's Mettle job command grants the essential squire abilities of Fundaments, as well as others that are unique to him.
Description
Gallant knight, also known as heavenly knight, is a special job in Final Fantasy Tactics, exclusively named in The Ivalice Chronicles. It is an advanced version of the squire job with greater stats and a broader range of equipment options. The job is unique to Ramza Beoulve and comes with its own Mettle skillset, itself an expanded version of the basic squire's Fundaments skillset.
Unique to Ramza, the job evolves as the game progresses, adding more equipment options in new chapters. In chapter 4, "In the Name of Love", the job is renamed from "squire" to "gallant knight" and has its broadest array of equipment. This means that unlike the basic squire job, gallant knight is useful later in the game.
The name change reflects Ramza's resolve to follow his own path for what he truly believes is right, fighting injustice and protecting the common folk. It is a way for him to honor the wishes of his late father, Barbaneth Beoulve, known as the Knight Gallant in the Fifty Years' War, who tells Ramza to become a knight worthy of his name. Mechanically, it also refers to Ramza's squire now being able to equip knight's swords.
Delita Heiral also has the Mettle command as a squire in chapter 1, but only has access to Chant.
Gameplay[]
Overview[]
Unlike the basic squire, the gallant knight gains new abilities and more equipment options as the player progresses through the chapters. In addition to naturally having better stats than the regular squire, in chapter 1 a support build can be made with Ramza thanks to his ability to equip robes to increase MP, as well having higher magick attack than the regular squire; mystic can immediately learn Hesitation to cast Disable with high success, and Invigoration to drain 25% HP from anyone, including bosses, while having Defense Boost to survive even longer against physical attacks. Starting from chapter 2, Ramza's squire can equip shields and heavy armor, turning him into a more mobile and faster knight, but slightly lower physical attack and HP. In chapter 4, when Ramza becomes a gallant knight, he gains access to the powerful knight's swords.

His Mettle, as opposed to Fundaments, gains additional buffing abilities over the course of the chapters, that can also be used on other units; Tailwind and Steel increase speed (up to 50 for extra turns) and bravery, respectively. This solidifies Ramza's squire as a potent offensive support unit that can slowly empower his team and himself over the course of long battles, since those attribute buffs last until the fight is over (although Steel allows units to permanently increase their bravery by 1 for every 4 bravery). Chant can heal units (including Undead) while taking its damage cost from Mana Shield to MP, or have HP refilled by Auto-Potion.
In chapter 4, Ramza acquires the ability Shout, which increases his own speed, physical attack, and magick attack by 1 each and his bravery by 10; it cannot be used on other units. This greatly increases the abilities/weapons that benefit from 2 of these increases, such as Geomancy for MA/PA, knight's swords that use bravery and PA, and Jump with PA/Speed.
Ramza's gallant knight can also learn the spell Ultima, which require a special condition: he must be hit with the spell and take damage (works even if he has Mana Shield equipped) while he is a gallant knight to learn it, a unique trait to his and Luso's game hunter job. Unlike with Luso, Ramza may only learn Ultima in chapter 4, noted by a line of dashes when inspecting his squire job. The only enemies who can cast Ultima are Celia, Lettie and the Ultima Demons. To quickly learn Ultima, it is recommended to equip items that prevent Stop and Charmed, and to keep distance from Celia and Lettie. Ramza and Luso may cast the spell on the other for them to learn it; Luso is able to learn Ultima earlier in the Riovanes Rooftop battle during chapter 3, "The Valiant".
Unlocking[]
The job has the same unlocks as the basic squire job: it unlocks archer and knight at level 2. Squire level 8 is a requirement to unlock mime, and in The War of the Lions, squire level 6 is required for onion knight.
Stats and equipment[]
Ramza's squire/gallant knight job has slightly greater stats than the basic squire job. It has medium base Physical Attack and Magick Attack stats, as well as medium base HP and MP. This is in contrast to the basic squire, which has medium HP, low Physical Attack, and very low Magick Attack stats. Ramza's squire/gallant knight also has greater Physical Evasion at 10%, and significantly greater Speed at 10, which is better than many other jobs, and faster than the basic 6 Speed of regular squires.
Uniquely among jobs, Ramza's squire job gains a broader range of equipment as the game progresses. Initially, Ramza only has access to the same equipment (except axes) that other squires have (for weapons: knives, swords, and flails; basic armor in the form of hats and clothes). At chapter 2 onwards, Ramza's squire gains access to helmets and armor, while at chapter 4, Ramza's gallant knight can equip knight swords, a much more powerful weapon.
The gallant knight's good, rounded stats, along with its broad equipment range, makes it a more useful job later in the game, as opposed to the basic squire job which is more limited in its use after unlocking other jobs and some abilities.
Abilities[]
For Ramza, the job takes 2,570 JP to master (2,520 JP to master in the original version).
Mettle[]
Chant costs nothing to learn, while Ultima must be cast on Ramza in chapter 4 for him to learn it.
