This article is in need of a few pictures. Perhaps you can help by uploading a picture of missing artwork and 2013 version sprites.
Final Fantasy V features numerous weapons and weapon classes. This page lists and describes them, their stats, their special properties, and their methods of acquisition. The primary names and in-game descriptions are the ones given in the Advance and subsequent releases. When different, names from the PS version are included below the primary names.
Damage formulas and mechanics[]
With limited exceptions (e.g. weapons dealing fixed damage, such as the Excalipoor), the damage output of any given weapon is calculated according to a general algorithm that can be simplified into a formula for illustrative purposes:
The meaning of each component of the formula, the base sub-formulas to compute A, D, and M, and the additional modifiers are all explained in detail here.
Some weapon classes that use agility in their base sub-formula for M have a known bug that lowers their damage output, and sometimes makes it inconsistent upon leveling up.
Action categories[]
All actions in the game possess an action category. The action category of regular attacks (and some commands) depends on the equipped weapon(s). Most weapons possess the Physical action category. Enemies (not party members) have sometimes the property of not being able to evade actions related to certain actions categories (discounting the image status for physical actions).
Special properties[]
Some weapons have one or more special properties. Only row interaction and spellblade compatibility are generally included in the in-game menu description.
The special properties that are relevant for weapons are:
- Added ability
- Added status
- Catcher
- Critical hit
- Double grip
- Elemental
- Elemental magic booster
- Item magic
- Row interaction
- Rune
- Spellblade compatibility
- Stat booster
- Strong against (attacks)[note 1]
- Strong against (spells)
- Throwable
- Miscellaneous
Obtained[]
There are several ways to obtain weapons in Final Fantasy V:
- They can be initially equipped by characters when they join the party.
- They can be bought in shops.
- They can be found in chests, pots, other containers, and interactable spots of the environment (bushes, walls, etc.).
- They can be obtained by talking to NPCs.
- They can be dropped by enemies:
- Guaranteed drop: 100% probability.
- Common drop: 15/16 probability.
- Rare drop: 1/16 probability.
- They can be stolen from enemies (all probabilities must be compounded with the probability of a successful steal, which is 40% normally, and 80% with Thief's Gloves equipped):
- Guaranteed common steal: 100% probability.
- Common steal: 246/256 probability.
- Rare steal: 10/256 probability.
- Unique rare steal: 10/256 probability, repeatable until successful.
Weapon tables[]
In the following tables weapons are categorized by type. For each weapon, the included columns are:
- Name: the weapon's in-game name(s). The Advance name is always included. PS name is included underneath when different, together with images of the weapon's sprite(s) and artwork.
- Attack: the weapon's attack power, used in damage computation. For weapons that cast spells when attacking, the Power value is shown instead.
- ThrowAtk: the attack value used in damage computation if the weapon is thrown with the !Throw command (when applicable) or equipped when using Goblin Punch (always available). It often matches Attack with some exceptions. This is the value that is mistakenly labelled as Attack in the in-game menu.
- Base accuracy: the weapon's base hit rate (percent) used in hit determination. Some thrown items display "Always", meaning they cannot miss.
- Action category: the action category associated with physical attacks and commands performed with the weapon.
- Throwable: indicates whether the weapon can be thrown with the !Throw command (Yes/No).
- Cost: the amount of gil required to purchase the weapon from shops. A dash (—) indicates the item cannot be bought.
- Sold: the amount of gil received when selling the weapon in shops (often half of the purchasing price). A dash (—) indicates the item cannot be sold.
- Acquired: all known methods of obtaining the weapon (buying, stealing, drops, chests, events, or initial equipment).
- Other special properties: notes on all special properties not already covered by previous columns.
- Description: the in-menu description of the weapon, italicized at the bottom of each entry. It is often misleading, incomplete, or incorrect, and should not be relied upon in order to determine the weapon's properties.
Axes[]

Axes can be equipped by Freelancers, Berserkers, and Gladiators. They use the same base sub-formulas to compute A, D, and M.
The A base sub-formula results in anything between 50% and 150% of the original attack value being used in the damage calculation. Also, due to the D base sub-formula, axes ignore at least 75% of the target's physical defense stat.

Bells[]

Bells can be equipped by Freelancers and Geomancers.
The Gaia's Bell and the Rune Chime are indistinguishable from axes for all intents and purposes.
The Diamond Bell and the Tinklebell deal magical damage. As such, they use base sub-formulas to compute A, D, and M where having high magic and agility and level will do more damage. In particular, such sub-formulas were changed in the Advance version to boost the damage, and changed again in the Pixel Remaster version to reduce the damage (without reverting to the underpowered SNES/PS formulas).

Boomerangs[]

Boomerangs can be equipped by Freelancers, Thieves, Ninjas, and Mimes. They are one of the few classes of weapons that do not feature a sealed weapon.
With the exception of the Twin Lance, all boomerangs use the same bugged base sub-formulas to compute A, D, and M, where having higher strength and level will do more damage, and the agility contribution is both minimal and inconsistent.
The Twin Lance is treated as a spear for all intents and purposes.

Bows[]

Bows can be equipped by Freelancers, Rangers, and Gladiators. They are unaffected by row, and all but one of them must be double-gripped.
Attacks made with bows only consider 50% of the target's evasion during hit determination. However, most bows have a lower-than-average base accuracy. As the game performs two independent checks (first on accuracy, then on evasion) during hit determination, and an attack needs to pass both in order to hit, bows tend to miss more than other classes of weapons.
In the Pixel Remaster version, they deal increased damage against targets that cannot evade actions whose category is aerial. Such modifiers do not stack with themselves (e.g. when the Artemis' Bow strikes a target such as Rajiformes).
With the exception of the Magic Bow (which deals no damage by design), all bows use the same bugged base sub-formulas to compute A, D, and M, where having high strength and level deals more damage, and the agility contribution is both minimal and inconsistent.
The Rune Bow is not considered a rune weapon for damage calculation purposes. It does not even use any damage formula, due to its added ability. It is also the only single-gripped bow.

Hammers[]

Hammers can be equipped by Freelancers and Berserkers. They are otherwise indistinguishable from axes for all intents and purposes.

Harps[]

Harps can be equipped by Freelancers and Bards. They must be double-gripped at all times.
Harps do not physically attack. Rather, they cast spells that are affected by shell and reflect. They also trigger counters specific to magical attacks (e.g. Mega Flare from Twintania).
The Apollo's Harp's spell uses the regular spells' base sub-formulas to compute A, D, and M where high magic stat and level deals more damage. The Attack value is used as Power. If targeting dragons or undead targets, it applies some additional modifiers to greatly increase its damage output (essentially, the A parameter is multiplied by a factor of 8).
All other harps cast spells dealing fractional damage based on the target's current HP, and miss against heavy targets.

Katanas[]

Knight swords[]

Knight swords can be equipped by Freelancers, Knights, and Gladiators, and are mostly compatible with !Spellblade.
The Blood Sword deals magical damage. Therefore, it uses the regular spells base sub-formulas to compute A, D, and M (higher magic stat and level deals more damage). Using it with offensive commands triggers a drain-like effect with the usual caveats. Its damage is reduced by shell, but unaffected by reflect (as it is not a proper spell).
The Brave Blade uses a specific set of base sub-formulas to compute A, D, and M. Its attack power decreases by 1 (down to a minimum of 0) for every escape from battle. In the Pixel Remaster version, this mechanic is reversible.
All remaining knight swords use the same base sub-formulas to compute A, D, and M where having more strength and higher level deals more damage.

Knives[]

Knives can be equipped by most jobs, the exceptions being Monks, White Mages, and Oracles.
Most knives are compatible with !Spellblade. With the exception of the Man-Eater, only 50% of the target's Evasion is used during hit determination.
With the exception of the Man-Eater and the Chicken Knife, all remaining knives use the same bugged base sub-formulas to compute A, D, and M where having more strength and higher level deals more damage, and the agility contribution is both minimal and inconsistent.
The Man-Eater is considered a spear for all intents and purposes.
The Chicken Knife gains an additional attack point every 2 escapes from battle (up to 127 attack), and is unaffected by the aforementioned agility bug. It is therefore the strongest weapon in the game when fully powered up.

Rods[]

Rods can be equipped by Freelancers, Black Mages, Time Mages, Summoners, Blue Mages, Red Mages, Necromancers, and Mimes. They are also unaffected by row.
The Wonder Wand and the Lilith Rod have damage-replacing added abilities. In particular, the Wonder Wand casts spells in a fixed order, starting from Cure up to Osmose, and then looping back to Cure. It can also be used when the Mute spell has been cast.
All remaining rods use the same base sub-formulas to compute A, D, and M, where the damage is highly variable but having higher magic stat and level deals more damage overall.
Notably, breaking some rods to cast spells counts as a physical attack for the purpose of certain enemies' counterattacks, such as Omniscient.

Short swords[]

Short swords can be equipped by Freelancers and Ninjas. They only take 50% of the target's Evade into calculations. They are also compatible with !Spellblade. Some in-menu descriptions improperly denote them as "katanas".
All short swords use the same bugged base sub-formulas to compute A, D, and M, where having higher strength stat and level deals more damage, and the agility contribution is both minimal and inconsistent.

Spears[]

Spears can be equipped by Freelancers, Dragoons, and Gladiators.
All spears use the same base sub-formulas to compute A, D, and M, where having higher strength stat deals more damage.
Spears deal increased damage with the !Jump command. Counterintuitively, they are not compatible with Two-Handed.

Staves[]

Staves can be equipped by Freelancers, White Mages, Time Mages, Red Mages, Chemists, Oracles, and Mimes.
The Power Staff and the Healing Staff do not perform physical attacks due to their damage-replacing added abilities.
The Staff, Flail, Morning Star, and Mace of Zeus are indistinguishable from axes for all intents and purposes.
Attacks with the Light Staff, Staff of Judgment, and Sage's Staff are considered regular spells, rather than physical attacks. For that reason, the attack value displayed in the equip menu is actually their ThrowAtk, only used for Goblin Punch and !Throw purposes. The real value used in damage calculation is the relevant spell Power.
In the Pixel Remaster version, the Light Staff's and Staff of Judgment's Power is doubled with respect to earlier versions, while the Sage's Staff is unchanged.

Swords[]

Swords can be equipped by Freelancers, Knights, Mystic Knights, Blue Mages, Red Mages, Cannoneers, and Gladiators. They are one of the few classes of weapons that do not feature a sealed weapon (as the Excalibur counts as a knight sword).
The Excalipoor deals fixed damage (exactly 1 point of damage no matter what, assuming it hits).
The Rune Blade uses the axe base sub-formulas and expends MP to deal extra damage.
All remaining swords use the same base sub-formulas to compute A, D, and M where having higher strength stat and level deals more damage.

Throwing items[]

Throwing items come in two varieties: scrolls and shurikens. Both are usable with the Throw command. They are also one of the few classes of weapons that do not feature a sealed weapon.
Shuriken types (Ash, Shuriken, and Fuma Shuriken) use the same base sub-formulas to compute A, D, and M where having higher strength, agility, and level deals more damage.
Scroll types (Fire Scroll, Water Scroll, Lightning Scroll) use the regular spells base sub-formulas to compute A, D, and M where having higher magic stat and level deals more damage.

Whips[]

Whips can be equipped by Freelancers and Beastmasters. They are also unaffected by row.
All whips use the same bugged base sub-formulas to compute A, D, and M, where having higher strength stat and level deals more damage, and the agility contribution is both minimal and inconsistent.
In the Pixel Remaster version, they deal increased damage against targets that cannot evade actions whose category is aerial. Such modifiers do not stack with themselves (e.g. when the Dragon Whisker strikes a target such as Dragon Aevis).

Weaponless attacks[]
Characters with both hands empty will attack once with each fist. Unlike Final Fantasy IV (and successive entries), fists are not considered a class of weapons, but rather represent the absence of weapons. As a corollary, they do not feature a sealed weapon.
The base sub-formulas to compute A, D, and M depend on whether the attacker has the Barehanded ability (either equipped, or natively by being a Monk or a Freelancer/Mime after mastering Monk) and/or is equipped with the Kaiser Knuckles accessory.

There are two unused weapons in the game's code:
- The Mythril Staff, only obtainable via cheat codes and version-dependent glitches (item transformation bug and control glitch) is another axe-like staff.
- The Sabre, only obtainable via cheat codes / item transformation bug, is an unequippable knife.
