A world-continent existed during the Hyborian Age.[10] The northwestern part of the landmass was known as the Hyborian Lands,[11] or Hyboria,[12] and was populated by the Hyborians (or earlier the Hybori), and included the Hyborian Kingdoms.[13] South of the Hyborian Lands were the Southern Kingdoms,[14] and even further south, the Black Kingdoms.[10] At the center of the continent lay the Vilayet Sea, and to the east Hyrkania, Iranistan, Kosala, Ghulistan, Vendhya, Uttara Kuru, Khitai, and Kambuja.[15]

- Part of the continent is named after the Hyborians, the ancestral tribal group which founded several of its kingdoms. In the essay The Hyborian Age (1936), Conan-creator, Robert E. Howard gave a detailed history of the setting but never once referred to the world-continent as "Hyboria".[24] According to Howard, the Hyborians named themselves after their patron god, Bori.[citation needed]
- Tony Edwards's map of the Hyborian Age, appears to be an attempt at reconciling the erroneous Hyboria nomenclature, labeling the north-western "Hyborian Lands" as "Hyboria" rather than the entire continent.[12]
