The Adventure Game is one of five TOS strategy board games released by West End Games in 1985. This game merges a "choose your own adventure"-style book with a board game in a gameplay version of the Federation and Klingon Empire's exploration of the Organian Treaty Zone in the late 2260s decade. The board is a large star chart representing a section of known space.
Some events might unfold more or less as they did in canon, although Captain Koloth and his crew might encounter the planet killer or find Trelane on Gothos instead of the USS Enterprise. His ship might also be dispatched to crush a rebellion or repel a Romulan attack on a Klingon world. Either starship might have original adventures on worlds such as Berengaria VII, Coridan, Cygnia Minor, Makus III, or Ophiucus VII. With three main story arc options for each of 40 planets, the game allowed for 120 different planetary adventures.
Description[]
- In Star Trek: The Adventure Game, you send forth a starship, exploring unknown planets across the immense distances of space. One player represents the mighty United Federation of Planets; the other, the powerful and mysterious Klingon Empire. Solo play is also possible.
- With outright war between the two interstellar powers forbidden by the Organian Treaty, both are constantly striving to increase their prestige and size. This is done by discovering, exploring and then persuading — or forcing — new worlds to join your federation or empire.
- Play is simple, but successful exploration does not come easily. Upon reaching a planet, you choose a course of action, and learn from a special booklet how the planet and its inhabitants react to you. You might conquer a new world — or you could lose a starship!
Log entries[]
- Captain's log, stardate 2743.2
- We are beginning our exploration of the Organian sector, which lies between Earth and the Klingon Empire. Although largely unexplored, it is neutralized by the Organian Treaty, so direct conflict with the Klingons is prohibited. With eager anticipation and high hopes, we start our search for peace and friendship....

Appendices[]
Background[]
- Box art repurposed Boris Vallejo's cover art from TOS novel: Black Fire.
- A timeline placement would be influenced by three Klingon bird-of-prey starships appearing in support roles during the game. The Z'gavva-class bird of prey cruiser was seen in service in TOS novel: Dreams of the Raven in 2268, and was the most likely ship class candidate, whereas an early B'rel-class prototype was not seen until 2270 in ST video game: Legacy mission: "The Squeeze". The Klingon bird-of-prey (2260s) might have been in service at the time, but this class did not resemble the ship icons used in the game.
- Gameplay determined planetary locations within the Organian Treaty Zone, offering no definitive sector data for those worlds. However, planets within Federation and Klingon borders were denoted on the star chart game board in numbered, hexagonally-shaped sectors. A handful of these designations contradict later-established canon, such as Earth being in sector "1028", Andoria in sector "1121", or Vulcan in sector "1825".
- The game added three preexisting species from other West End Games properties into Star Trek: the reptilian Gwynhyfarr from Web and Starship; and the Philanthropists and Macrons from Cosmic Encounter.
Errata[]
- Janus VI was mistyped Janus IV, an oft-repeated error in licensed publications. Trelane was spelled Trelayne despite his starring in another West End Games board game released the same year, The Enterprise4 Encounter.
- In the game, players encountered Kelvan invaders on Ceti Alpha V rather than on Nalogen IV.
