Starbase 172 was a Federation starbase in a location near the planet's Riat and Wyath.

In 2369, in an effort to locate a missing shuttlecraft, Starbase 172's sensors were tied in with those of the USS Enterprise-D's the planetary sensor array on Wyath to form a triangulation pattern to detect unique materials known to be on the shuttle, allowing the vessel to be found. (TNG comic: "Light of the Day")

Specifically the Starbase was 12.7 light year's from the Enterprise's position which was moving between a location near to Riat toward the planet Wyath.
