Starbase 56 was a Federation Starfleet space station, a K-class starbase located in neutral territory, in the vicinity of the Klingon frontier, in Sector 6701. (TOS - Unlimited comic: "Trekkers"; TNG episode: "Aquiel")

Service history[]

In 2267, Admiral Herbert Solow ordered Captain James T. Kirk to put in at Starbase 56 to receive a refit to the USS Enterprise's weapons and deflector shields in preparation for war with the Klingon Empire. The Enterprise also took on new crew members following recent losses at Janus VI. (TOS - Errand of Fury novel: Seeds of Rage)

In 2270, Lieutenant Hikaru Sulu and Ensign Pavel Chekov visited Starbase 56 for shore leave, and to bring a new Type-4 shuttlecraft to the Enterprise. (TOS - Unlimited comic: "Trekkers")

In the year 2369, one of the starbase's missions was to act as a deep space post for Sector 21834. The station also appeared on a chart titled "Sector Ipai Relay Log - Relay Message Flow 1293" in the Relay Station 47 Ops. (TNG episode: "Aquiel", production art)
