— Hyness, Kirby Star Allies

Hyness, titled Officiant of Doom, is the principal villain in Kirby Star Allies, serving as the penultimate boss in Story Mode. He is a mad priest who worships Void Termina, and leads his cult from the fortress world Jambandra, where his dark god was sealed in ancient times. Known as the Officiant of Doom, Hyness is a venerable wizard who conceals himself in a white robe with long trailing sleeves and a veil that covers his face, such that only his beady yellow eyes can be seen. While his shape and motions would suggest he has limbs, these are never seen from under the robe, which makes it entirely possible that he does not have any. Hyness leads a host of subjects, the most prominent of which are The Three Mage-Sisters: Francisca, Flamberge, and Zan Partizanne. When his hood is removed, he is revealed to have a blue face, blue and yellow striped ears, and eyes that move independently of each other like those of a chameleon's. Aside from the huge nose, Hyness's face (particularly his ears) has an uncanny resemblance to the shape of Magolor's head.

It is implied in the separate The Ultimate Choice - Soul Melter EX Special Pages for Francisca, Flamberge, and Zan Partizanne that Hyness saved their lives from doom. Since then, they look up to him with admiration and seek his guidance, a loyalty that is ultimately exploited by the crazed officiant.

Hyness's name may be a corruption of the word "highness", a title given to a person of royalty, or used in adressing them.

Personality[edit]

According to an interview with Shinya Kumazaki in the Nintendo Dream magazine issue from June 2018, Hyness always had a wicked heart, but he still saved the Three Mage-Sisters after they nearly died and took them in. The mages hold him in great respect as a result, even though he often treats them poorly. Despite that, he seemingly often apologized for forgetting Zan Partizanne's name, and even tried to warn her whenever his heart started to act crazy again, as implied in his phase two boss fight pause description in The Ultimate Choice, and in the phase two boss fight pause description of Corrupt Hyness. Moreover, the 14th post of the Kirby Star Allies Channel states that Hyness had forsaken his own heart and fell into darkness, becoming trapped in a spiral of loneliness and despair. Thus, he had changed for the worse.

Hyness is depicted as completely insane, with incredibly deranged mood swings. He fits the image of a demented cult leader or priest. When Kirby and his friends encounter him, he first talks calmly and somewhat eerily but then starts to become furious. He begins shaking his head and flailing his arms rapidly while talking very quickly. In his second phase, he starts making strange angry grunting and snorting noises and doing bizarre dances. His battle themes also seem to elaborate on his eeriness and insanity.

Game appearances[edit]

Kirby Star Allies[edit]

Story Mode[edit]

Splash screen of Hyness in Kirby Star Allies
Hyness calls upon the power of the Jamba Heart in the intro cutscene.

Hyness debuted in Kirby Star Allies, where he is first seen in the intro movie, beginning a ritual to activate the Jamba Heart by removing the heart spears that keep it sealed. The spears are successfully removed, but this causes the heart to shatter, scattering its pieces all over the galaxy. Though this was not known to Kirby at first, the shattering of the heart was in fact a mistake, as Hyness sends out the Mage-Sisters to retrieve the pieces and bring them back to Jambandra for a do-over. When Kirby and his allies eventually reach The Divine Terminus, they find Hyness watching over the heart as the last pieces return to it. Zan Partizanne tries to stop the Star Allies from interfering, but is defeated, and collapses before the altar. Seeing this, Hyness turns to face the allies himself, coldly swiping Zan out of the way for her failure. After delivering a very long and crazed rant at Kirby, Hyness proceeds to fight the Star Allies. Shortly into the battle, however, his hood gets knocked off, revealing his true face. From there, he uses the unconscious bodies of the three Mage-Sisters as weapons against Kirby, even forming his own version of a Friend Circle during the battle.

Kirby manages to defeat Hyness, forcing him to resort to extreme measures to revive the still-incomplete Jamba Heart. To fill in for the missing pieces, he tosses the three Mage-Sisters into the heart, then dives headlong into it himself as a sacrifice. This done, Void Termina awakens from his slumber, and Kirby has to defeat him using the Star Allies Sparkler. During the fight with Void Termina, Kirby and his allies climb inside the great beast. There they find Hyness and the Mage-Sisters wrapped in flesh cocoons. After dealing heavy damage to Void Termina's core, Kirby, his allies, and all four of the sacrificed devotees are expelled from the dark lord's body. After that point, Hyness and the Three Mage-Sisters are not seen again for the remainder of the story.

Dialogue[edit]

During his crazed rant, Hyness says a great deal which requires close inspection to understand (as the dialogue text scrolls too quickly to read in a timely manner). The full text for that portion is as follows:

We are the masters of a power driven to the far reaches of the universe, and we have but one desire! Can one such as you possibly fathom how dearly we have clung to this dream across the aeons? How could you! You couldn't! Never ever ever! We who once faced those who were in such fear of our power that they sealed us away and banished us to the edge of the galaxy! US! As if THAT loveliness wasn't enough, they tried to erase our very existence from history! RUDE! Only through our magic were we able to overcome their science and achieve great prosperity! We alone were responsible for stopping that repulsive nightmare of a galactic crisis, yet this is how you repay us! This won't stand! It won't be forgiven! It won't be forgotten! Never ever EVER! Those who called us mad, are you listening? You left us at the edge of the galaxy to be forgotten, then went along your merry way, probably living somewhere pretty and peaceful! But know this! Your future is a farce! You have none! We, masters of a matter most dark, vow to be restored, as foretold in the book of legend, which everyone thought was just a fairy tale! It WASN'T! We have already obtained the vessel that contains our Dark Lord, and he will soon awaken and shower us in compassion! Look! The vessel of our Dark Lord is filling up even as we speak! Now the time for his greatness to enter our world has come! Welcome to a new history! A new age! The age of awesome! HAPPY BIRTHDAY, DARK LORD! HAPPY BIRTHDAY!

The contents of this rant have many implications lain therein, but since Hyness is a questionable character, and this information was presented so quickly and with minimal context for many of the statements, the words should probably not be taken at face value.

Boss battle[edit]

Hyness shows his true face.
Hyness worships a deity of destruction whom he plans to bring back to life. However, a rite gone wrong has led to the dark power he needs being scattered across the galaxy. Now he seeks to gather this power at an altar. Stop him, Star Allies!
— VS Hyness (Phase 1) in Story Mode and Guest Star ???? Star Allies Go!
His once carefully concealed face now exposed, Hyness is on the rampage! Tossing the three unconscious sisters around like rag dolls, it’s clear he’s lost his grip on reality. It’s up to the Star Allies to bring an end to this nightmare, and save...everything!
— VS Hyness (Phase 2) in Story Mode and Guest Star ???? Star Allies Go!
Hyness did not fully grasp how to completely break the seal. All that was written about Void Termina in the ancient scrolls was the progenitor of darkness was vanquished by four heroes of yore, using four spears of the heart. After that, they were never seen again.
— VS Hyness (Phase 1) in The Ultimate Choice
Bonjam = Greeting Jambuhbye = Goodbye Jamblasted = Anger Juh? = Huh? Vun = Very Jamanke = Thank you Japologa = I'm sorry Jonto = Soon Jaway = I forgot Majaja = Again
Example: "Zan Par...? Jaway majaja! Japologa vun."
Translation: "Zan Par...? I forgot again! I'm very sorry."

— VS Hyness (Phase 2) in The Ultimate Choice

Hyness's fight takes place at The Divine Terminus in Far-Flung Starlight Heroes, just after Zan Partizanne is defeated. He is also fought at the end of level 5 in Guest Star ???? Star Allies Go!, and as the final boss of the Sizzling Threat difficulty and is also fought on the Fiery Showdown, Infernal Crisis and Soul Melter difficulties in The Ultimate Choice. It consists of two distinct sections. In the first, Hyness battles Kirby alone, using his magic to form orbs and elemental discharges. Once Hyness is nearly depleted in health, his hood gets knocked off, and he brings the Three Mage-Sisters in, sapping their life-force to replenish his own. From there, he fights while using their bodies as both weapons and shields. When Hyness is not using them to attack, the sisters orbit their master and will deflect Star Bullets that cannot penetrate objects, as well as other weaker projectiles. Attacking the Mage-Sisters will not damage Hyness.

The following lists all of Hyness's attacks.

Hyness's attacks in Kirby Star Allies
Attack Description
ジャマ
Jam
Hyness tosses a series of black energy orbs out of his sleeves at Kirby, with slight homing properties. These create Dropped Stars if they hit the ground.

In phase 1 in Story Mode and lvl. 5~7 of The Ultimate Choice, he throws sets of one orb. In phase 2 of the same modes and phase 1 in Guest Star ???? and Soul Melter, he throws sets of two orbs. In phase 2 of Guest Star ???? and Soul Melter, he throws sets of three orbs.

ジャママジャーマ
Jam Again
Hyness summons a series of sharp magical spears, which fan out and strike everywhere except the middle of the arena. They can be swallowed or destroyed. Later in the fight, Hyness can summon three sets of spears one after another.
ウンジャマ
Vun Jam
Hyness tosses a large energy orb at Kirby. Once it hits the ground, it splinters into three smaller orbs which splash outward.
メラーガ・マッデム
Sizzle Jamblasted
Hyness causes fiery pillars on both sides to erupt from the floor, leaving stars that grant the Fire ability in their wake. Guarding does not protect Kirby and his friends from this attack. Hiding underneath Hyness is the safe zone.
バリカ・マッデム
Zap Jamblasted
Hyness strikes the ground with a powerful lightning bolt, which causes sparks to travel across the floor and leave stars that can be inhaled for the Plasma ability. Always performed immediately after Sizzle Jamblasted.
ブリザ・ハローア
Blizzard Bonjam
Hyness summons several large icy Jambastion emblems across the arena, which can freeze Kirby and his allies if they get too close when they activate. After activating, stars that give the Ice ability are left behind afterward. The Jambastion emblems can be destroyed by Sizzle attacks. In Guest Star ???? and Soul Melter, Hyness can do this attack twice in a row.
Second phase only
デクふらし
Rag Doll Throw
Hyness throws each Mage-Sister at Kirby, causing crystals to form where they land. These crystals can be swallowed to gain the Ice, Fire, and Plasma abilities, depending on the type.
These crystals can also be destroyed by their respective weaknesses:

A destroyed crystal can be inhaled to get the Stone ability. The sisters are always thrown in the order of Fransisca, Flamberge, and then finally Zan Partizanne.

デクバット
Rag Doll Bat
Hyness grabs hold of one of the Mage-Sisters and swings her wildly at Kirby like a club before eventually slamming her down on the ground creating shockwaves and dropping ability-granting stars. Each mage club can be stopped by the respective weakness. Hyness can either use one Mage-Sister and swing her four times before slamming or use all three one after another; with the first two getting swung once before slamming and the last one getting swung twice before slamming.
デクころがり
Rag Doll Circle
Hyness forms up onto a Friend Circle with the Three Mage-Sisters and starts rolling frantically around the stage, leaving stars on occasion.
  • Both corners on the floor are the safety zone where the allies can't be hit (unless they are too big, in which case they have to crouch in the corners to avoid damage).

In the end, he will return to the middle and throw the Mage-Sisters to the ground, leaving himself stunned.

いけにえのかご
Sacrifice Cage
Hyness surrounds himself with the Three Mage-Sisters as shields. Then, he tosses energy orbs behind the shields, starting with two, three or four sets of small orbs and then one giant orb before repeating the cycle. Hyness is invincible as long as he is hiding behind the shields. However, once he takes enough damage when exposed, the Mage-Sister shield can be destroyed, leaving him stunned.
Attack names listed are taken from Japanese strategy guides.

Heroes in Another Dimension[edit]

Main article: Corrupt Hyness
Splash card for Corrupt Hyness.

In Heroes in Another Dimension, it is stated that after the events of Story Mode, Hyness performed chants and prayers that caused a dimensional rift to appear, and he soon fell into another dimension; the Three Mage-Sisters also enter the rift in search of him.

After unlocking the Final Dimension, Hyness transforms into Corrupt Hyness, titled Fell Officiant. He takes this appearance after the four spears of the heart open up the Jamba Heart he was encased in. This is a dark-colored, more powerful version of Hyness, who summons three logs wearing the Mage-Sisters' costumes to use as weapons and a shield after being unhooded. After Corrupt Hyness is defeated, Zan Partizanne arrived, and seeing him defeated next to Kirby, he calls on Francisca and Flamberge, who are angered by the state he is in. Kirby then proceeds to fight The Three Mage-Sisters as a whole.

How Hyness ends up at the end of the mode depends on how many Friend Hearts Kirby has collected in the prior stages:

  • If Kirby defeats the Mage-Sisters with 100 or more hearts, he will befriend the sisters, who then give Kirby a Warp Star. As Kirby leaves, a heart falls from it onto Hyness. He is then put back into his normal form, and sees the generals, who are delighted to see he is okay.
  • If beaten with 99 or less, the Mage-Sisters and Hyness are left unconscious as the screen fades to black.

Super Kirby Clash[edit]

Hyness appears in Super Kirby Clash as a resident of the Castle Village, appearing after completion of Super+: The True Final Battle EX. He is seen floating through the village in the background. He also appears as a sticker, which is based on his appearance in the card that shows after completing Heroes in Another Dimension with all 120 Friend Hearts in Kirby Star Allies. This sticker is unlocked after clearing the "Tougher: Taranza" Party Quest.

Kirby's Return to Dream Land Deluxe[edit]

In Kirby's Return to Dream Land Deluxe, a Dress-Up Mask based on Hyness' unhooded form can be worn, which replaces the wearer's voice with that of his own. It can be unlocked by completing card #46 of the Stamp Rally.

Music[edit]

Hyness has different boss battle themes for his two phases, as well as additional assorted music. All these themes are composed by Jun Ishikawa in the style of gamelan, which is Indonesian religious music that prominently features metallophones.

"Puppet Offering"[edit]

Main article: Puppet Offering

The first battle theme of Hyness is titled "Puppet Offering". It can be found as Track 109 in Star Allies Jukebox.

The first section of this theme has a slow tempo and is very faithful to the style of gamelan, but the later sections have very different melodies, incorporating a bowed string instrument and a bassoon.

"La follia d'amore"[edit]

Main article: La follia d'amore

The second battle theme of Hyness, which plays when his hood is knocked off, is titled "La follia d'amore",[1] which means "The Folly of Love" in Italian. It can be found as Track 110 in Star Allies Jukebox.

"La follia d'amore" has a much faster tempo than "Puppet Offering", and while it keeps some gamelan influence, it slowly strays away from the style and becomes more electronic as it progresses.

Other tracks[edit]

The dialogue music of Hyness, "Hall of Worship" (as well as the stage theme in the room preceding him, "Path of Worship") is actually a slower, gamelan-style arrangement of "Friendly Field". He also has a separate dialogue theme when he sacrifices himself and the Mage-Sisters to the Jamba Heart, "Liturgy of Holy Submission", which is similarly done in gamelan style.

Trivia[edit]

  • In one official Twitter post, Francisca describes the nose of Hyness as "spiritual and amazing" (スピリチュアルでアメージングな鼻).
  • Hyness replenishes his health bar during the fight by sapping energy from the Mage-Sisters after summoning them to give himself a refill. Since he summons three logs dressed as the Mage-Sisters as Corrupt Hyness, he naturally cannot siphon life from them in that form, so he is not healed and instead changes his behavior after 40% of his health is gone.
  • When Hyness summons the Mage-Sisters to drain their life-force, they can be heard laughing just before the life-drain. During certain attacks throughout his second phase, the Mage-Sisters can also be heard groaning in pain.
  • Hyness' model had a yellow, blue, and green recolor in the game's internal files from Version 3.0.0. and earlier, much like those of the playable Friends and Dream Friends. This suggests that Hyness may have originally been planned to be playable during the game's development.[2]
  • In Heroes in Another Dimension, Corrupt Hyness lies unconscious in the background during the boss battle against the Three Mage-Sisters. However, during said battle in Soul Melter EX difficulty of The Ultimate Choice, Corrupt Hyness is absent. Similarly, Hyness and the Three Mage-Sisters are not seen in the background of Void Termina's second phase in The Ultimate Choice.
