Elline is a magical paintbrush fairy who debuted in Kirby and the Rainbow Curse. Prior to the events of the game, she and Claycia were best friends. When Claycia goes mad and tries to kidnap Elline using Grab Hands, she encounters Kirby and Bandana Waddle Dee, and they all set out to return both Claycia and Dream Land to normal.
Elline is responsible for painting the Rainbow Ropes which Kirby uses to get about in Seventopia. She can also transform Kirby into one of three different forms: the Kirby Tank, Kirby Submarine, and Kirby Rocket. Since her debut appearance, she has appeared via cameos in various other Kirby games.
Physical appearance[edit]
Elline is essentially an anthropomorphized paintbrush with wings and disembodied hands. Her torso is colored magenta with a red gemstone in the middle and she has peach skin along with blue eyes and brown eyebrows. She can use her multicolor brush hair to paint things and, when necessary, can transform herself into a more ordinary-looking paintbrush.
In some concept art, Elline was depicted with a color wheel at the tip of her brush hair and yellow, pointed feet.
Personality[edit]

Elline is very childlike, and only truly wants to paint things that Claycia sculpts. While not much can be gleaned from her personality in-game, she keeps a Secret Diary which can be collected in pieces in the Goal Game, which sheds some light on her inner thoughts. After rescuing Kirby and Waddle Dee from petrification (and being rescued from the Grab Hands that were pursuing her), she considers them her friends.

Kirby and the Rainbow Curse[edit]

Elline is one of the primary protagonists of Kirby and the Rainbow Curse. She first appears in the introductory cutscene after Claycia drains all of the color from Dream Land, appearing from a wormhole in the sky. Unfortunately for her, two Grab Hands have given chase. She is able to use her paint to revive Kirby and Bandana Waddle Dee. Kirby rescues her from being grabbed once he is revived, and then Bandana Waddle Dee uses his spear to send the Grab Hands packing. She explains the situation to Kirby as he forlornly looks over the colorless apple he was about to eat. The three of them decide to head to Seventopia to catch up with Claycia and retrieve Dream Land's stolen color.
For most of the game, Elline takes the form of an ordinary paintbrush who can paint rainbow ropes for Kirby to ride upon. She accompanies Kirby during map screens and cutscenes, and at certain points, she will paint a new form for Kirby to transform into: Kirby Tank, Kirby Submarine, and Kirby Rocket. Pages of her Secret Diary can be unlocked during the Goal Game, which reveal various insights into her personality and feelings. She reveals she used to be friends with Claycia, but the latter recently began acting "strange", leading to a rift between them. She expresses a desire to become Claycia's friend again, with help from Kirby.
In The Final Battle, when Claycia finally reveals herself, Elline appears to be distraught and attempts to talk her out of her diabolical deeds, but Claycia merely smacks her away with one of her Grab Hands, leading Kirby to battle her. After the fight, her "sunglasses" are knocked off and she returns back to normal; Elline and Claycia embrace as Kirby celebrates. However, the "sunglasses" reveal themselves to actually be Dark Crafter, who was possessing Claycia all along to take the color for himself. Realizing his plan is foiled, he attempts to flee with the color in tow; while Elline panics, Claycia thinks quickly and crafts a canvas, allowing Elline to summon the Kirby Rocket and accompany him to chase after Dark Crafter.

When Dark Crafter is defeated, he relinquishes his stolen color, and Kirby and Elline return triumphant to a nervous Claycia. The three of them celebrate their real victory, and craft a Warp Star that allows them to fly home. At the end of the credits, Claycia returns Dream Land's color, and the game closes out as Elline and Claycia gift Kirby with a surplus of apples.

Kirby's Dream Buffet[edit]

Kirby Air Riders[edit]

Elline makes a cameo appearance in the Road Trip mode of Kirby Air Riders, where she is one of the two possible choices at the crossroads of Low-Road Cavern. If chosen, Elline will draw a Rainbow Rope that acts as a gate leading to Neon Promenade. Elline is also depicted on an Icon and Sticker that the player can use on their License Card, which can be unlocked on the Road Trip Checklist.
Super Smash Bros. Ultimate[edit]
Elline makes her Super Smash Bros. debut as a spirit in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, and is obtainable in World of Light. Her location is on a ribbon-like strip south of where Galeem, the Lord of Light, makes his lair before the player defeats him. She is an Advanced rank support spirit who provides the host fighter with a Fairy Bottle at the start of battles, likely a reference to her spritely nature. In the Spirit Battle, she is portrayed by a tiny Palutena, and several, round, ball-shaped items spawn on the battlefield, probably referring to Kirby's ball-like appearance in Kirby and the Rainbow Curse. Elline's spirit can also be obtained by summoning her with the spirits or cores of Smeargle and Wanda.
In the Kirby novel series[edit]

In the Kirby novel series, Elline makes an appearance in Kirby's Labyrinth Rescue!. In this novel, Elline is mad at Claycia because of her sudden and unexplained change in mood. In her anger she throws a lump of clay at King Dedede without notice. She tells Kirby and the others who came out of the mirror that they are in her room and not in the Mirror World, and that she bought the mirror they came out of in an antique shop, with the help of Claycia. Being reminded of her, she becomes mad again. She tells Kirby about how cold and crabby Claycia suddenly became and about how much she hates her. Kirby convinces her to make up with Claycia and volunteers to help her. King Dedede also agrees to help, asking for food in return, even though Elline tries to convince him to leave it to Kirby. After Kirby and Dedede help Claycia finds her inspiration, she comes and shows Elline her work. Elline is overjoyed with the statue and tells her this is her best art piece. Claycia tells her that she made it for her birthday and apologizes. Elline and Claycia forgive each other and Elline agrees to paint the statue. They gift Kirby a canvas which make Kirby transform into a rocket and thank them before they leave.

Trivia[edit]
- According to Shinya Kumazaki, Elline was considered as a Dream Friend for Kirby Star Allies, along with other characters such as Drawcia, Shadow Kirby, and Galacta Knight, but ultimately wasn't chosen due to a rule that was established soon after, which excluded characters from spin-off games.[1]
