The Invincible Candy,[1] formerly known as Candy[2] or Invincibility Candy,[3] is a special item found in most games of the Kirby series. It is a rare item that resembles a glowing lollipop with a star. While the Invincible Candy is a lollipop, it is not technically food, as it does not recover any health.

The Invincible Candy makes Kirby, his helper(s), or other playable character(s) temporarily invincible when eaten, enabling them to harm enemies and bosses without taking damage, as well as moving through hazards like spikes unharmed. The Invincible Candy also has a distinctive theme associated with it. However, the invincibility wears off after a few seconds, and it does not protect Kirby from falling into a bottomless pit or being crushed. In various multiplayer games starting with Kirby Super Star, its effect can be shared with Kirby's allies for a short time by Feed Me.

Game appearances[edit]

Kirby's Dream Land[edit]

In Kirby's Dream Land, the Candy makes Kirby invincible for a short time. He will flash, surrounded by small stars. The effects are carried over between rooms and on the Warp Star; however, there are no situations in which the effects of the Candy last after taking the Warp Star. Making contact with a foe triggers hitlag. The Candy can be consumed by simply touching it or inhaling it from afar, in which case Kirby automatically swallows anything he may have inhaled. The effects of the Candy do not protect Kirby from bottomless pits.

Candy can only be found in Castle Lololo.

Kirby's Adventure / Kirby: Nightmare in Dream Land[edit]

In Kirby's Adventure and Kirby: Nightmare in Dream Land, Invincible Candy can be found dispersed across some stages in the game or, exclusively in the former, tossed to Kirby by Meta Knight in select stages, usually placed in locations where the player is encouraged to use the candy to safely run across straightforward sections filled with different types of enemies. Invincible Candy can be inhaled from a distance and makes the user immune to hazards, foes and projectiles, albeit while slowing down due to hitlag; the user is still vulnerable to bottomless pits and crushing. These effects are referred to as "Hyper", or 無敵むてき (Muteki, "Invincible") in the Japanese version. In the remake's multiplayer mode, Kirbys can share the Candy via Feed Me.

Invincible Candy can be found in the following levels and stages:

Kirby's Pinball Land[edit]

In Kirby's Pinball Land, Candy behaves similarly to Apples. Coming in contact with it consumes it without knocking Kirby back and grants the player 3000 points.

Kirby's Dream Course[edit]

Name entry screen.

Despite not appearing in Kirby's Dream Course proper, Invincible Candy can be picked as a stamp template when customizing a new player's icon.

Kirby's Block Ball[edit]

In Kirby's Block Ball, the Candy is treated as regular food that can be dropped by a foe when it's defeated. Candy gives 1500 points when consumed.

Kirby Super Star / Kirby Super Star Ultra[edit]

In Kirby Super Star and its remake, Kirby (or Meta Knight in Meta Knightmare Ultra) can share the effects of the Candy with a Helper via Feed Me shortly after it is consumed. The duration of the Candy's effect if received by Feed Me depends on the remaining duration it has on the player who has obtained the Candy first. The effects don't carry over to new helpers. Notably, the user now speeds up in addition to becoming invulnerable; however, it can only be consumed by making direct contact. When getting the Mix ability, Kirby has the option to land on a "Super" icon, or 無敵むてき (Muteki, "Invincible") in the Japanese version, which triggers the effects of the Candy at any point in the current stage. The same is true in the remake, where the effect is referred to by the name of the object, "Invincible Candy". However, while regular foes and mid-bosses can be damaged by an Invincible Kirby or Helper, larger Bosses are immune to the Candy's effects.

Additionally, Kirby can be seen carrying Invincible Candy among food items in the save file select's image for Gourmet Race.

Kirby's Dream Land 3[edit]

In Kirby's Dream Land 3, the Invincible Candy gives both Kirby and Gooey (if he was present when it was consumed) a trail when moving and a glowing effect with stars and bubbles, as well as the ability to defeat foes and destroy Star Blocks upon contact. Summoning Gooey after consuming the Candy will not transfer the effects onto him. However, mounting an Animal Friend will give the effects to them for as long as they would last normally or until they are dismounted.

Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards[edit]

Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards was the first to give the Invincible Candy a unique, original track instead of the usual remix of its theme from Kirby's Dream Land. Like in Kirby's Dream Land 3, Kirby once again is able to destroy Star Blocks and plow through enemies by simply touching them while under the effects of the Invincible Candy. Unlike in most games, the effects do not carry over from room to room. Notably, Kirby's appearance when using the candy features him being surrounded by stars, instead of flashing different colors like in previous titles.

Kirby Tilt 'n' Tumble[edit]

In Kirby Tilt 'n' Tumble, Invincible Candy temporarily makes Kirby impervious to enemies, allowing him to roll right through them.

Kirby Air Ride[edit]

In Kirby Air Ride, Candy appears only in the Top Ride and City Trial modes. In both modes, it makes Kirby's Air Ride Machine impervious to all attacks, items, and hazards. It may also appear in the Stadium modes Destruction Derby and VS. King Dedede. Notably, Candy does not play its signature theme, rather a whooshing sound will play to alert other players. Like its other appearances, the Candy will make the player flash and have stars surround them as well.

Kirby & The Amazing Mirror[edit]

In Kirby & The Amazing Mirror, the Invincible Candy works much like in Kirby: Nightmare in Dream Land. The newly introduced Magic copy ability has a chance to provide the user invincibility via a roulette in which the Candy is depicted. Shadow Kirby may also drop an Invincible Candy once defeated.

Despite Invincible Candy effects being hypothetically transferable to any room, boss rooms cancel out the effects of both the Candy and the invincibility granted by the Magic roulette.

Kirby: Canvas Curse[edit]

In Kirby: Canvas Curse, the Invincible Candy appears as one of the possible drawings in the Paint Panic Sub-Game.

Kirby: Squeak Squad[edit]

Invincible Candy can be seen among other goodies when selecting a save file.

In Kirby: Squeak Squad, the Invincible Candy retains all of its properties from Kirby & The Amazing Mirror, including the chance of getting an invincible effect from Magic's roulette. Additionally, Invincible Candy can be stored in bubbles and is obtainable with the ? bubble roulette. Storo also has a chance of dropping Invincible Candy when attacked.

Unlike in Kirby Super Star and its remake, Invincible Candy is an effective way to defeat any boss in the game.

Invincible Candy can be seen in a save file's icon next to the chest after 51 or more chests have been collected in said save file.

Kirby Mass Attack[edit]

In Kirby Mass Attack, the Invincible Candy is replaced by the Jumbo Candy and cannot be found under normal circumstances. However, upon getting a Game Over three times in a row in the same stage, said stage will offer a regular Invincible Candy at the start. Unlike Jumbo Candy, the Invincible Candy will not make the Kirbys increase in size. Like in Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards, this game also has a unique Invincible Candy theme.

Kirby's Return to Dream Land / Kirby's Return to Dream Land Deluxe[edit]

In Kirby's Return to Dream Land and Kirby's Return to Dream Land Deluxe, the Invincible Candy retains its properties from Kirby Super Star, Kirby & The Amazing Mirror and Kirby Super Star Ultra, speeding up its user and making the character invulnerable to everything the game has to offer with the exception of bottomless pits and crushing. While under the effects of the Invincible Candy, the user and their health bar glow in the colors of the rainbow. Notably, this game features the fastest-paced version of the Candy's theme.

Additionally, the Invincible Candy is one of the possible book covers in Kirby's Return to Dream Land Deluxe's Magolor's Tome Trackers Sub-Game.

Kirby: Triple Deluxe[edit]

In the main playable modes of Kirby: Triple Deluxe, the Invincible Candy's effects are unaltered from Kirby's Return to Dream Land.

Additionally, there is a keychain picturing the Invincible Candy as seen in Kirby: Nightmare in Dream Land.

Kirby Fighters series[edit]

In the Kirby Fighters series, the Invincible Candy does not speed up the user nor damage opponents upon contact, though it still makes anyone who picks it up invincible for a short duration. In the latter two games, it can even be shared via Feed Me in Team Battles.

Kirby and the Rainbow Curse[edit]

In Kirby and the Rainbow Curse, when using the Candy, Kirby's speed is increased just like in Kirby's Return to Dream Land and in Kirby: Triple Deluxe. Kirby can also use a Star Dash at any time while under its effects. When the Candy's effects are about to end, an audio cue is present to alert the player of such. Like in Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards, the effects do not carry over between rooms. This is the only game to have several of these lollipops within a single stage. Notably, the Candy is the only item that can help Kirby defeat the otherwise unbeatable Dethskullks and the Dethskullk King, which is why it is more commonly dispersed across the stage The Haunted Ship.

Kirby Star Allies[edit]

In Kirby Star Allies, Invincible Candy preserves its Kirby's Return to Dream Land properties. In addition, a special effect happens when acquiring some Invincible Candy while riding the Friend Star. The pause screen lists this effect as a move called "Shooting Star", and it allows the Friend Star to plow through enemies, metal blocks, and fragile walls by simply moving into them.

Kirby and the Forgotten Land / Kirby and the Forgotten Land – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition + Star-Crossed World[edit]

When Kirby is under the effect of Invincible Candy, he can defeat strong enemies like Wild Edge by simply touching them.

In Kirby and the Forgotten Land and its Nintendo Switch 2 Edition, Invincible Candy works much like its predecessors, albeit with the Feed Me animation changed to a high-five. In addition, while Invincible Candy doesn't make Kirby immune to bottomless pits, cold water, or magma, it will decrease the damage taken from falling into these obstacles.

Invincible Candy is also the primary object of the Sweet Success! Invincible Rampage Treasure Road.

Notably, the final Mouthful Mode segment of the main game (Big-Rig Mouth during the Fecto Elfilis fight) plays "A Full-Speed Farewell from the New World", which incorporates the Invincible Candy theme and even uses the term 無敵むてき ("invincible") in its Japanese name (無敵むてきにGOODBYE NEW WORLD!).

Additionally, one of the collectible figures from Vol. 1 features an Invincible Candy.

Kirby's Dream Buffet[edit]

In Kirby's Dream Buffet, an Invincible Candy can rarely appear in Food Boxes, though higher priority is given to players near the bottom of the standings. Like in the rest of the series, anyone using the candy is made temporarily invulnerable to hazards for a few seconds, and during this time, if the player manages to send an opponent flying off the stage in a Battle Royale, the opponent(s) will briefly get stuck on the screen before sliding down it.

Additionally, a Character Treat of the Invincible Candy appears using its artwork from Kirby: Nightmare in Dream Land.

Kirby Air Riders[edit]

In Kirby Air Riders, the Invincible Candy appears in the same fashion as it does in Kirby Air Ride, being an item in both Top Ride and City Trial. However, exclusively in City Trial, and unlike Kirby Air Ride, the Invincible Candy is accompanied by its signature theme when used, using the original version from Kirby's Dream Land.

In addition, four License Card stickers depict Invincible Candy; one with its in-game item appearance, one with its appearance in Kirby Café artwork, one with its Kirby's Dream Land sprite, and one with its Kirby's Adventure sprite.

Super Smash Bros. series[edit]

In Super Smash Bros. Brawl, Invincible Candy appears as a sticker which adds +4 damage to R.O.B.'s "Specials: Direct" attacks. It is unclear exactly which attacks are boosted by this sticker.

Music[edit]

The very first "Invincible Candy" theme from Kirby's Dream Land.
Main articles: Invincible Candy (theme from Kirby's Dream Land), Invincible Candy (theme from Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards) and Kirby Collecting

While Kirby is under the effect of an Invincible Candy, a special musical theme plays, which can be heard in nearly every game that includes the Candy. Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards and Kirby Mass Attack are the only games to have a different Invincible Candy theme than the recurring one. When the Invincible Candy is consumed in Kirby Air Ride, no special theme is played at all.

Trivia[edit]

  • In promotional art for the Kirby series, e.g. from the "Pupupu Train" event or the Kirby JP Twitter, Invincible Candies are depicted as ordinary lollipops that are sold in stores.
  • The effect of the Invincible Candy is similar to that of the Super Star from the Mario series. In recent Mario games, the Super Star can speed up its user, too.
  • Despite never having an appearance within the novels themselves, Invincible Candy is depicted on the title pages for Kirby Meets the Squeak Squad! and Kirby: Big Race in Pupupu Land!
