— Daroach, Kirby Mass Attack

Daroach (/dəˈɹoʊt͡ʃ/) is a mouse-like caped thief and magician who serves as the mysterious leader of the Squeaks and a recurring character in the Kirby series. He first appears as the secondary antagonist of Kirby: Squeak Squad, where he earns Kirby's ire by stealing a chest which Kirby believes to contain his missing Strawberry Shortcake. After Kirby defeats Dark Nebula, who was actually sealed in the chest, the misunderstanding is cleared up and the two make amends. Daroach would later appear as an ally in Kirby Mass Attack, where he helps the Kirbys by giving them hints to find the Medals. He also makes playable appearances as a Dream Friend in Kirby Star Allies and as a rider in Kirby Air Riders.

Characteristics[edit]

Daroach resembles a mouse, like other members of the Squeaks, and is considerably larger than Kirby. He has a gray body with orange eyes and three orange claws on each hand. He has no visible limbs; his hands and feet appear disconnected from the rest of his body. He wears a red top hat, a red cape (which is tattered in Kirby Air Riders), and an orange bell on his neck. In Kirby Star Allies, the orange in his design is instead more yellow. He is capable of floating and teleporting at will and uses the Triple Star cane as his main weapon, though he also possesses a magic wand that shoots ice beams, as well as fire bombs.

Kirby: Squeak Squad[edit]

Daroach makes his first appearance in Kirby: Squeak Squad, though he has no direct dialogue, instead being described in cutscenes and appearing in-game in a few places. He is first seen in stage 3 of Prism Plains, where he directs the Squeaks to chase after Kirby after he picks up the large Treasure Chest near the end of the stage. Daroach also appears briefly at the start of the boss fights with Mecha-Kracko and Yadgaine, specifically ordering these bosses after Kirby, but does not fight Kirby directly until Ice Island.

Daroach in Ice Island[edit]

Kirby battling Daroach at the end of Ice Island in Kirby: Squeak Squad.

During Kirby's long chase of his lost Strawberry Shortcake (he believes it's in the treasure chest stolen by the Squeaks), he will find and fight Daroach at the end of Ice Island. The ground of this boss stage is covered with ice which can be melted by fire element Copy Abilities such as Fire and Fire Sword.

Daroach primarily attacks via three methods:

  • Throwing bombs;
  • Shooting three stars from the Triple Star Cane, which ricochet off the walls and the ground;
  • Firing an ice beam across the stage.

He can also avoid Kirby's attacks by constantly teleporting throughout the stage.

When Daroach is defeated by Kirby, however, Meta Knight suddenly appears and takes away the supposed Strawberry Shortcake chest from the Squeaks. Kirby must collect all five Star Seals to enter Secret Sea where Meta Knight locates, but the Squeaks secretly follow Kirby's way.

When Meta Knight is also defeated by Kirby, the Squeaks appear again and steal back the supposed chest from Meta Knight, but...

Although presented as the main antagonist at the beginning of the game, after stealing back and opening the supposed chest, Daroach is possessed by the real mastermind released from the chest, Dark Nebula. As such, Daroach flees and appears as a boss again at the end of Gamble Galaxy, this time called Dark Daroach.

Upon Dark Daroach's defeat, he is released from the trance and transforms back into his regular form, causing Dark Nebula to flee from his body and forcing Kirby to chase it with the Triple Star Cane left by Daroach.

Kirby Mass Attack[edit]

Main article: Daroach's Airship
Welcome, my little friend! Or should I say...friends? I am Daroach, the captain of the treasure-hunting Squeaks. I have sniffed out a stash of riches that I must possess. Medals, on this island! Would you help me collect these medals?
— Daroach's first dialogue to Kirby in Kirby Mass Attack.

Daroach and the Squeaks reappear in Kirby Mass Attack, but only Daroach has a speaking role. His airship appears on every level hub except for Necro Nebula, and Kirby can visit it at any time to obtain factoids from the wily mouse about the Popopo Islands and its inhabitants, as well as hints on how to survive and obtain medals. All of these hints can be viewed on the Daroach's Airship page.

In Kirby Mass Attack, he reveals tidbits about himself as well.

  • Before King Dedede made his resort on Dedede Resort, Daroach used to go there to "steal the hearts of ladies".
  • Cemeteries scare him, because "anything could pop out at you".
  • The rest of the Squeaks are family to him.
  • He wishes he had a Nintendo 3DS, because they are "worth their weight in gold".

When Kirby collects all 186 Medals, Daroach takes them and gives Kirby the Survival Rush book in return. He then departs on his airship.

Daroach also appears in the Kirby Quest Sub-Game as the first enemy encountered in Chapter 4. He has 222 HP, and if Kirby misses any attack against him, he flees.

Kirby: Triple Deluxe[edit]

While Daroach himself does not appear in Kirby: Triple Deluxe, Dark Daroach makes a cameo appearance as a keychain.

Kirby: Planet Robobot[edit]

Daroach's official art from Kirby: Squeak Squad and a new doodle of him both appear as stickers in Kirby: Planet Robobot.

Kirby Star Allies[edit]

Daroach when summoned as a Dream Friend
The illustrious thief from Kirby: Squeak Squad is back, and there's nothing he can't—or won't—steal! If making friends is all it takes to find some treasure, this purloiner is happy to tag along with the Squeak Squad in tow!
— Daroach's pause screen description in the Story Mode and The Ultimate Choice of Kirby Star Allies

Daroach was added as a Dream Friend in version 3.0.0 of the game, which released on July 27th, 2018. This made him a playable character for the first time in the series. When playing as him in Guest Star ???? Star Allies Go!, several areas change to resemble places from Kirby: Squeak Squad, and the final battle with Morpho Knight has the Squeaks' theme playing over it.

Daroach can use many attacks from his previous boss battles, including Ice Laser, Fire Bomb, and Triple Star. He can also summon members of the Squeaks to assist him. He receives new melee attacks with his sharp claws, which can cut ropes and grass. He can't hover, but can jump infinitely like other Friends.

— Daroach's description in Kirby Air Riders

Daroach is a selectable rider and playable character in Kirby Air Riders. Like all other riders, he is capable of using copy abilities. Alternately, without a Copy Ability, he can attack enemies and other riders with claw swipes, and in doing so, may steal the Copy Ability of a rider who has one. For his Special, Sneaky Dash, he turns invisible and increases his speed, briefly reappearing to attack any rider he touches. This guarantees the theft of a Copy Ability.

Daroach can be unlocked either through Air Ride by defeating a Gemaine, or through Top Ride by winning after lapping at least one other rider. His alternate color is based on Dark Daroach. On the Road Trip Checklist image, he can be seen riding the Rocket Star.

In the Kirby novel series, Daroach appears as the main antagonist of Kirby Meets the Squeak Squad!. He is a slick thief who is the honorable leader of the Squeaks. He has a calm and levelheaded personality. He also has strong morals; his plans of thievery involve being as stealthy as possible without hurting anyone. Daroach also carries a cane that can shoot ice beams, which he uses when fighting.

In Kirby Meets the Squeak Squad!, Daroach, along with the rest of the Squeaks, try to steal an egg that its mother bird had trusted Kirby and Waddle Dee to take care of. He is first seen spying on them outisde Castle Dedede, alongside his lackeys, planning to swiftly take the egg when they are asleep, without waking them up. When they do so, Daroach accidentally sets off their "warning device", made of cans and rocks that were tied to the egg, waking up Waddle Dee and Kirby. Daroach removes the warning device and flees with the egg, with his henchmen following. Kirby gives chase, and gets the Spark ability along the way to deal with Daroach's henchmen. When Kirby catches up to Daroach, he shoots a huge bolt of lightning, numbing him, and takes the egg back. After this, Meta Knight comes in to help the Squeaks out, revealing that he had become affiliated with them for an unknown reason.

A few nights later, Daroach decides to let his Squeakers sneak into the attic of Waddle Dee's room to fill it with sleeping gas. He sneaks in with his lackeys and now Meta Knight, who all wear face masks to protect them from the sleeping gas. Unfortunately for them, Kirby has a dream about food, and starts sleep-inhaling. They all flee because it is too dangerous. When Kirby, Waddle Dee, and King Dedede return to the temple where they first found the egg, the Squeaks follow after them there. According to Meta Knight's plan, they snatch Waddle Dee along with the egg, but then fall into a trap door leading to an underground lake. Once everyone is safely at the lake's surface, Meta Knight explains to Waddle Dee that there is a whole misunderstanding about Daroach and his intentions. After he tells him everything, Kirby and King Dedede catch up, and shortly after, Fatty Whale shows up and chases them all out of the underground lake. The group ventures through the rest of the underground area, and eventually fights Wham Bam Gaia at the end. Daroach helps in the fight by firing ice beams from his cane to freeze parts of Wham Bam Gaia.

After the mother bird, Acti Blade, flies them out of the temple, Daroach is finally able to explain the whole misunderstanding to everyone. He reveals that he only wanted the cushion that was tied to the egg. Daroach had trouble falling asleep before and wanted to find a good pillow, so he went for the egg's cushion, which is made of Acti Blade's feathers. Acti Blade forgives him for the trouble and lets him keep the cushion as he gives back her egg. Meta Knight then reveals that he was helping Daroach because he was indebted to him for saving his henchmen Sword Knight and Blade Knight in the past.

Daroach is also mentioned in the next novel, Kirby: Meta Knight and the Puppet Princess, where more info is given about the time Daroach helped Meta Knight before the events of Kirby Meets the Squeak Squad!. Baron Gallic was after Meta Knight's legendary sword, the Galaxia. He hypnotized Sword Knight and Blade Knight with a mysterious red gem, and convinced them that Meta Knight is a universal threat. However, Daroach had noticed this, fully aware of Gallic's criminal nature, and informed Meta Knight about it. Thanks to Daroach, Meta Knight was able to bring his henchmen back to reason, and prevent Baron Gallic from taking his sword.

Daroach also reappears in Kirby and the Search for the Dreamy Gears!, which takes place in an alternate universe. In there, Daroach has two identities, one of a regular café manager and one of a great thief, a bandit who steals from evil aristocrats. He learns the news about the missing gears and the ancient machine from President Dedede, which makes him suspicious of Hugo's real intentions for collecting the gears, since he knows his true pesonality. Daroach comes to Meta Knight's mansion and asks him for help with learning about the ancient machine and exposing Hugo's evil plan. Meta Knight agrees to help him and Daroach leaves.

After Meta Knight learns that one of the gears is located in Hugo's mansion, he tells Daroach and they go to the mansion. To get into the mansion, Daroach latches a grappling hook onto the wall and they both climb on its rope. To find the gear, Daroach calls upon the Squeakers who go everywhere in the mansion without leaving footsteps. After they return, they tell Daroach where the gear is, but also that there is a hidden room in the mansion. Meta Knight and Daroach grab the gear and Daroach tells him that after they expose Hugo, he wants to keep the gear for himself as a treasure. They find the hidden room behind a bookshelf. Daroach finds a safe in the hidden room, but when he breaks it open, an alarm starts playing. Daroach and Meta Knight are chased by guards. To keep Meta Knight safe, Daroach gives him the photo from the safe and distracts the guard by revealing his identity as the great thief. The guards begin to attack him, but he dodges all their attacks and runs away.

Daroach returns to Meta Knight and sees that he deciphers the ancient writing in the photo, but after spending all his energy, he needs rest. Meta Knight wakes up him to tell him about the warning about the ancient machine, and they decide to warn the others who collected the gears from Hugo's plans. After Magolor steals all the gears, Daroach and Meta chase him, but when they find him already captured by Hugo, they battle Hugo's subordinates. They stop fighting after Hugo holds Waddle Dee hostage. In the ending of the story, Daroach creates a new type of chocolate cake, and everyone eats it together.

Kirby's Star Fortune[edit]

Daroach is the leader of a band of thieves. His friendship with Kirby deepens as they compete to find the treasures of the world. Since they're both accomplished treasure hunters, if they team up there's nothing they won't find!

Trivia[edit]

  • Daroach and the Squeaks were originally called ドロチュー (Dorochū) in early concepts, a simple portmanteau of the Japanese words dorobō (thief) and chū (a childish onomatopoeia for a mouse squeaking). While the designers thought this name was cute, design supervisor Atsushi Kakuta thought "Dorochū" was too cute; he was concerned that using such childish language would pigeonhole Kirby as a character for young children. After reading a design proposal that misspelled his name as ドローチュ (Dorōchu), Kakuta thought it sounded better and decided to change the name. Further tweaks eventually led to ドロッチェ (Dorotche), which is intended to have a "cool and Italian-like" sound.[2]
  • Due to his role in Kirby Mass Attack, Daroach has by far the most dialogue of any character in a single Kirby game, at roughly 850 lines.
  • According to a Nintendo Switch News Channel post regarding Kirby Star Allies, Daroach hates tomatoes, but eats Maxim Tomatoes without complaining.[3] Daroach also mentions this in his dialogue from Kirby Mass Attack, but only in the Japanese version of the game.[4]
